BrowserProtect Unwanted Application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is BrowserProtect?
Browserprotect claims to protect Internet browsers from infectious plug-ins, increase Internet browsing speed, and provide other similar features - "BrowserProtect is a free software that makes your browsing safer. It stops online threats by defending your browser settings and preferences."
At first glance, this plug-in may seem legitimate and useful, however, it is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). After stealthily infiltrating the system, BrowserProtect causes unwanted browser redirects and tracks Internet browsing activity.
This PUP is developed to cause redirects to the search.yahoo.com website (a legitimate site, posing no threats to users). By causing unwanted browser redirects, BrowserProtect significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, BrowserProtect gathers various information regarding users' Internet browsing habits including IP addresses, browser type, websites visited, pages viewed, and search queries - these are just some examples from a long list of information types tracked by this app.
This gathered information is later shared with third parties, and therefore, the presence of BrowserProtect adware on your system can lead to various privacy issues. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall BrowserProtect immediately.
BrowserProtect is similar to the Search Protect application, which causes browser redirects to trovi.com. All adware claims to enhance the Internet browsing experience, and yet, none provides any real value.
AllDaySale, Social Reviewer, Crime Watch, and other similar adware-type applications, display advertisements and collect various user/system information. The purpose of the above apps is to generate revenue for the developers - they provide no significant value for the user.
How did BrowserProtect install on my computer?
BrowserProtect is available for download on its official website, however, users are likely to inadvertently install this application with regular software. BrowserProtect is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party apps with the chosen software/apps), and therefore, it usually infiltrates systems without users' permission.
The developers of rogue apps intentionally hide bogus apps within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. Therefore, by rushing the download and installation processes, and skipping this section, users expose their systems to risk of infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent such computer infections, express caution when downloading and installing software. Closely observe these processes and decline all offers to download/install additional software. In addition, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options when performing these procedures - this will reveal any hidden rogue applications listed for installation and enable you to cancel them.
