Social Reviewer Ads

What is Social Reviewer?
Social Reviewer is a deceptive application that (according to the developers) allows users to review their Facebook profile and see who is 'unfriending' them.
Some users may believe that this app is useful, however, Social Reviewer is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). After infiltrating Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Social Reviewer displays intrusive online advertisements and gathers various Internet browsing-related information.
This PUP employs a virtual layer to display in-text, interstitial, and other similar advertisements. At first glance, these ads might seem harmless, however, some may redirect to rogue sites, and thus, clicking them can lead to high-risk computer infections. The ads conceal underlying website content, thereby diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, Social Reviewer continually monitors Internet browsing activity and gathers various user/system information, some of which may contain personally identifiable details that are later shared with third parties.
Thus, having this app installed on your system can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that you uninstall this software.
There are hundreds of PUPs similar to Social Reviewer including AllDaySale, RapidReader, and Travel Output. These are just some examples from a long list of adware-type apps with similar behavior to Social Reviewer.
All adware claims to provide useful features to supposedly enhance the Internet browsing experience, however, the purpose of Social Reviewer (and other similar applications) is to generate revenue for the developers. These apps display advertisements and collect personally identifiable information - they provide no real value for users.
How did Social Reviewer install on my computer?
Today, most adware-type applications (including Social Reviewer) are distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of additional apps with the chosen software/apps. Many users are unaware that developers of bogus apps intentionally hide them within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.
By rushing the download and installation processes, and skipping most/all of the steps, users expose their systems to risk of infection. Developers are concerned only with the amount of revenue generated (which is dependent on the number of apps distributed), and therefore, they do not properly disclose installation of rogue software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To avoid adware-type computer infections, closely analyze the download and installation processes. Follow each step and decline all offers to download or install third party programs. Furthermore, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options when downloading and installing software - this will reveal any hidden, bundled software listed for installation and enable you to opt-out.
