Ads by mntr

What is mntr?
The Mntr application claims to save time and money by displaying coupons, special deals/discounts available at online stores, enabling comparison shopping, and offering other useful services. This functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, mntr is considered to be adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
The reason for these negative associations rogue behavior exhibited by mntr. After successfully infiltrating the system without users' permission, mntr monitors Internet browsing activity and generates intrusive online advertisements (usually marked as 'Ads by mntr').
To display advertisements, mntr adware employs the Xrosview advertising network. Although most generated ads are coupons or promotions for various services, they actually lead to the xrosview.com website. Moreover, display of advertisements significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience, since underlying website content is concealed.
Xrosview collects various information such as browser type and data (websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, cookies, etc.), IP addresses, time/date, geolocations, and other details. According to the developers (Montiera Ltd), the collected data is not personally identifiable.
This statement is false, since the aforementioned information clearly contains private details and is later shared with third party companies. Therefore, having mntr adware installed on your system can lead to various privacy issues. You are advised to uninstall this adware immediately.
Xrosview Privacy Policy regarding data sharing:
Montiera is working in cooperation with third party companies for the purposes of distributing the Products, providing advertising services through the Products and for other purposes relating to the administration, operation and commercialization of the Products (such third party companies are referred to as "Partners"). Montiera will not share personally identifiable information with any Partner.
mntr is similar to hundreds of other adware-type applications such as YTDownloader, App Lid, Premium Tabs, and Blazer Deals. Although these applications claim to be legitimate and provide many useful features, none deliver any real value for users.
Applications such as mntr are designed to generate revenue by displaying advertisements and collecting various user/system information.
How did mntr install on my computer?
Mntr is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party apps with the chosen software), and thus, it infiltrates systems without users' permission.
Many users do not pay enough attention during download and installation of software - they rush these processes and skip most/all steps, unaware that potentially unwanted applications are usually concealed within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings. By rushing the download and installation steps, users expose their systems to risk of infection.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Be cautious when downloading and installing software. Never skip any steps and decline all offers to download or install additional applications. Furthermore, use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled software listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
