MetroHotspot Toolbar

What is MetroHotspot?
MetroHotspot is a deceptive browser toolbar that supposedly helps users to find certain services (car rental, housing, etc.) - "Access eBay Classifieds, Oodle, Locanto and more for jobs, cars, housing and other deals. Find deals and services in your area with fast access to LivingSocial, Coupons.com, SmartSource.com and more. Get dining recommendations and local events from TripAdvisor, Seamless, Yelp and more."
At first glance, the functionality offered by MetroHotspot may appear legitimate and useful, however, this browser toolbar is considered to be a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). Stealth installation, modification of Internet browser settings, and tracking of Internet browsing activity are the main reasons for these negative associations.
MetroHotspot targets the Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox browsers. After successful infiltration, it assigns the new tab URL, homepage, and default search engine browser settings to the ask.com website without users' permission. Furthermore, it installs a number of applications/plug-ins developed to prevent users from rolling back these changes.
This type of behavior significantly decreases the Internet browsing experience, since users are continually redirected to ask.com when they attempt to search the Internet or simply open new browser tabs.
The developers of this toolbar (Mindspark Interactive Network) co-operate with various third party companies to share information collected by MetroHotspot - information that might be misused to generate revenue.
The gathered data may contain personally identifiable details, and therefore, the presence of MetroHotspot on your system could lead to various privacy issues. If you are concerned with your privacy and Internet browsing safety, we recommend that you uninstall MetroHotspot immediately.
To achieve their goals, Mindspark Interactive Network has released tens of deceptive browser toolbars identical to MetroHotspot. Although LotteryStream, Cool Popular Games, DailyRecipeGuide, WebmailWorld, ConvertAnyFile, and other toolbars offer different features, all have identical behavior.
After infiltrating the system, they modify browser settings, continually redirect users to ask.com, and record various system/user information. All of this is performed to generate revenue for the developers. Neither MetroHotspot, nor other toolbars developed by Mindspark Interactive Network, provide any significant value for users.
How did MetroHotspot install on my computer?
MetroHotspot usually infiltrates systems during the download or installation of other software. This deceptive software distribution method is called 'bundling'.
Many users do not express enough caution when downloading and installing software, hence, bundling (hiding installation within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings) is very effective. Users often rush the download and installation processes, carelessly skipping most/all steps, thereby inadvertently installing potentially unwanted programs such as MetroHotspot toolbar.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps that you should take to prevent installation of dubious apps such as MetroHotspot. Firstly, follow each step of the software download procedure and decline all offers to install additional programs.
Secondly, applications (especially free software) should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any bundled third party applications listed for installation and allow you to cancel them.
