DownShotFree Toolbar

What is DownShotFree?
The DownShotFree browser toolbar claims to allow users to take screenshots directly from their Internet browsers - "Make the task of taking screenshots simple with the DownShotFree toolbar and supporting application." This browser plug-in may seem legitimate and useful, however, DownShotFree is categorized as a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
These negative associations are made due to the deceptive behavior of this PUP. Following stealth infiltration of the system, DownShotFree modifies the Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox browser settings without users' consent. Furthermore, this browser hijacker monitors Internet browsing activity and records various system information.
DownShotFree assigns the browser default search engine, new tab URL, and homepage settings to the ask.com website. These settings are modified without users' permission. In doing so, this software significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience, since users are continually redirected to ask.com without their consent.
In addition, the developers of this application (Mindspark Interactive Network) collaborate with third party companies to share the gathered information. Be aware that the collected information may contain personally identifiable details and can be misused to generate revenue. You are strongly advised to uninstall DownShotFree from your system.
This deceptive browser plug-in is just one of many developed by Mindspark Interactive Network. The company has released other toolbars identical to DownShotFree including InternetSpeedUtility, File Send Suite, and DiscoverAncestry.
These toolbars offer different features, however, all have identical behavior - they stealthily infiltrate the system, modify browser settings, and collect personally identifiable details. Neither DownShotFree, nor any of these other toolbars, provide any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue for the developers.
How did DownShotFree install on my computer?
DownShotFree is available for download on its official website, however, it is likely to infiltrate systems during download/installation of other software.
Many users do not pay enough attention when downloading and installing software, and thus, the 'bundling' method (stealth installation of third party apps with regular software) is very effective. Users are often unaware that rogue applications are hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, and by skipping this section, they inadvertently install PUPs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Never rush the download or installation procedures. Closely inspect each step of the software download procedure and opt-out all third party applications included. Furthermore, software should be installed with the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any bundled apps listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
