Goinf.ru Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Goinf.ru?
The Video Saver application supposedly allows users to download videos from websites such as YouTube - "Video Saver - free browser extension for download video from Vkontakte, YouTube, and Facebook!". These claims are merely attempts to trick users to install.
Video Saver is, in fact, a bogus application categorized as a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). One of the reasons for these associations is stealth installation - Video Saver often infiltrates systems without users' permission. Following installation, Internet browser settings are modified and browsing activity is tracked.
After infiltration, Video Saver modifies the Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox settings by assigning the default search engine, new tab URL, and homepage fields to the goinf.ru website. Furthermore, it installs an application and browser plug-in that prevents users from rolling back these changes.
In doing so, Video Saver considerably diminishes the Internet browsing experience, since users are continually redirected to goinf.ru when opening new browser tabs or searching the Internet.
As with regular browser hijackers, Video Saver collects various Internet browsing-related information including Websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, IP addresses, and other collected data that might be personally identifiable. This is later shared with third parties and can be misused, thereby causing serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
In addition, search results displayed by goinf.ru may lead to infectious websites. The presence of Video Saver on your system is a potential threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety, and therefore, you are strongly advised to uninstall this PUP. Do not use goinf.ru as your default search engine or homepage.
Video Saver has similar behavior to other browser hijacking applications that also cause unwanted redirects and modify browser settings. Boxo-search.com, websearchy.com, spot-search.com, and zwiiky.com are just some examples from a long list of bogus websites claiming to be legitimate and useful.
The real purpose of these websites is to generate revenue for the developers by displaying ads (via the 'Pay Per Click' PPC advertising method), gathering information (and selling it to third parties), and causing unwanted browser redirects (to increase the traffic of certain websites). Browser hijacking applications provide none of the features promised and are useless to the user.
How did Video Saver install on my computer?
As with other other browser hijacking applications, Video Saver is usually distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software). Research shows that many users rush the download/installation procedures and skip most of the steps.
Bogus applications such as Video Saver are often hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, and therefore, rushing this process can expose the system to risk of infection. Since the amount of revenue received is dependent on the number of distributed applications, developers neglect to provide proper descriptions of third party software installed.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
There are two main steps you should take to avoid computer infections. Firstly, closely analyze each step of the free software download procedure and opt-out all third party applications included. Secondly, pay close attention when installing your software - select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, follow each step, and cancel all bundled programs listed for installation.
