Boxo-search.com Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is boxo-search.com?
Boxo Search is another version of the Spot Search and Bit Search apps. As with these two browser hijackers, Boxo Search claims to enhance the Internet search experience by displaying advanced search results - "Boxo Search aims to provide the ultimate online search experience. Our advanced technology provides you with the best of what the web has to offer, and makes it easier than ever to find exactly what you are searching for."
Many regular users find this functionality legitimate and useful, however, Boxo Search is a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). This application usually infiltrates Internet browsers without users' permission, modifies the settings, and then causes unwanted browser redirects and tracks Internet browsing activity.
Boxo Search assigns the new tab URL, homepage, and default search engine settings to its associated website - boxo-search.com. In addition, it is designed to install small apps/browser extensions to prevent users from reverting these changes.
This behavior significantly decreases the Internet browsing experience, since users are continually redirected to boxo-search.com when attempting to search the Internet or simply opening new tabs. Furthermore, this application monitors Internet browsing activity and collects various software and hardware information.
According to the developers, Boxo Search does not track personally identifiable information, however, the collected information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic locations), language settings, websites visited, search queries, pages viewed, etc.) clearly includes private details.
This gathered information is later shared with third parties and can be misused, thereby causing serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Boxo Search is a bogus application and a threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety, and therefore, should be uninstalled immediately.
Boxo Search Privacy Policy regarding information gathering:
We do not collect personal identification information including names, phone numbers and addresses. Users might be asked to add their email address to get information about Babylon Software and other special offers from Babylon Ltd. We do collect information necessary to enable certain features in the Toolbar Platform. We do not sell, rent or trade any personally identifiable information you provide when using the Toolbar, Search Software or the Web Sites.
Boxo Search is similar to other applications of the same type. There are hundreds of browser hijackers (for example, search.snapdo.com, golsearch.com, and max-start.com) that claim to be legitimate, and yet, these applications provide none of the features promised.
Boxo Search, and other browser hijackers, are developed to generate revenue for developers by displaying ads (via the 'Pay Per Click' - PPC - advertising model), causing browser redirects (thereby increasing traffic of certain websites), and collecting information (which is later shared with third parties).
Furthermore, they diminish browser and computer performance, and may cause further computer infections or privacy issues.
How did boxo-search.com install on my computer?
Boxo Search is commonly distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', which allows developers to stealthily install their apps together with regular software. This method is effective, since users often do not pay enough attention when downloading/installing software.
Bogus applications such as Boxo Search are usually hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings - when users skip this section, they inadvertently install these bogus apps. The developers are concerned with the number of distributed applications, and thus, do not properly disclose installations.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Popular freeware download websites monetize their traffic and free services via small programs called 'download managers', which are developed to include additional programs together with the chosen software. For this reason, select the direct download link if provided.
If you are forced to use a download manager, closely analyze each step of the installation process to ensure that only the chosen software is downloaded. After download, install software with the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any third party software listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
