What is Deals Avenue?
The Deals Avenue extension claims to enable various features, thereby tricking users into believing that it is a legitimate and useful browser plug-in. Deals Avenue, however, is adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Users often inadvertently install this application, since the developers employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', which allows them to distribute Deals Avenue adware with regular software.
These applications are often distributed with free applications on freeware download websites, and since some users rush installation without paying close enough attention, they expose their systems to risk of infection. Following successful installation, Deals Avenue displays intrusive online advertisements on most websites visited.
The developers employ a virtual layer, allowing them to place graphical content (for example, banner, pop-up, interstitial, transitional, search, coupon, and other ads) on any website. Some ads randomly open new browser tabs or windows, and therefore, users may accidentally click these.
These ads may redirect users to commercial websites (online stores, services, etc.), however, they may also redirect to infectious websites, thereby leading to high-risk computer infections.
Furthermore, users may be unaware that their Internet browsing activity is tracked by Deals Avenue adware. This rogue app collects various information and although its Privacy Policy states that the collected data is not related to users' identity, these claims are false.
Many adware-type apps collect Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, geographic location, websites visited, cookies, search queries, pages viewed, browser cache, saved passwords, and even keyboard/mouse inputs. Clearly, this kind of information might be personally identifiable.
Note that the collected information is later shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals who use it to generate revenue). This situation can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. For these reasons, you should uninstall Deals Avenue from your system immediately.
Deals Avenue is developed by SuperWeb LLC who have released several hundred adware apps identical to this PUP. Common Dots, Jungle Net, Filter Results, and Application Nation are just some examples from a long list. Although they claim to enable useful features, they provide no real value for the user.
Rogue applications often appear legitimate to trick users into installation, however, rather than providing any significant functionality, they display intrusive ads and share collected data with third parties to generate revenue.
Applications such as Deals Avenue are usually distributed using small programs called 'download' clients on freeware download websites including download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com. These sites enforce the use of download clients, which supposedly 'speed up and ease' the download process.
Their purpose, however, is to include third party applications with the chosen software. Promoted apps are presented as '100% legitimate', and yet, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infection. Never accept offers to install unrecognised third party apps.
If you have installed Deals Avenue, the following instructions will guide you through removal of this adware.
How did Deals Avenue install on my computer?
Deals Avenue adware is distributed using the bundling method - stealth installation of third party applications (mostly rogue) together with regular software.
Most users do not express enough caution when downloading/installing free software, and therefore, this method is extremely effective. Additional programs are usually concealed within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, since download managers and installer set-ups are not concerned with proper discloser of installations.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Pay close attention during the download and installation of any software. Download the desired software from the official website. If the website is not available, and you are forced to download the application from a freeware download website, use the direct download link, rather than the download manager.
Some of these sites provide no other choice other than to use the download app. In this case, closely analyse each step of the download process and opt-out of any third party software.
Similarly, with the installer set-up, never skip any steps and select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options - this will reveal any third party applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. These two procedures should be never rushed.
