MarkingApp Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MarkingApp?
This application may seem legitimate and useful, since it offers functionality supposedly to enhance the Internet browsing experience (an advanced Internet search capability).
Despite this, MarkingApp is considered to be adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). The developers (Virtue Interactive Ltd) employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to distribute this bogus application.
Bundling is stealth installation of additional programs together with regular software, and therefore, MarkingApp often installs on browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent. One symptom of this type of adware infection is the display of intrusive online advertisements.
MarkingApp displays a great variety of advertisement types (for example, coupon, banner, and pop-up) that redirect to bogus websites, thereby exposing your system to risk of infection.
Furthermore, many users are unaware that MarkingApp also monitors Internet browsing activity and collects various browsing-related information including (but not limited to) Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), unique identifier numbers, software installation date, operating system, and browser type and data (websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, default search engine, etc.).
There is a high probability that some of this collected information might be personally identifiable, and therefore, the presence on your system of information gathering applications may cause serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
Most adware-type applications have similar of identical behavior to MarkingApp. For instance, PaceItApp, BetterDeals, Halt-It, and Speederu also claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience (for example, by increasing Internet connection speeds, improving safety, and by saving time and money when shopping online).
Like MarkingApp, however, they merely display intrusive online ads and share collected data with third parties to generate revenue. This type of application is often distributed on freeware download websites that employ download clients as traffic and free services monetization tools.
Download clients (also called 'installers', 'download managers', and 'download tools') offer installation of additional programs together with the chosen free software, and while the developers claim that their software is 'legitimate and virus-free', reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
To avoid this situation, express caution when downloading free software, and closely observe each step to ensure that no extra apps are included.
Furthermore, installation of downloaded software should be performed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, rather than 'Typical', 'Regular', or 'Quick' - this will reveal any concealed applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. The following removal guide will help you to eliminate MarkingApp from your system.
