Surf-N-Block Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Surf-N-Block?
Surf-N-Block claims to provide Internet browsing protection, however, this is merely an attempt to trick users into believing that it is legitimate software. In fact, Surf-N-Block is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware. A previous version was named "BlockAndSurf".
A deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' is used in the distribution of this bogus app and is one of the reasons for these negative associations. Bundling allows developers to stealthily install their apps together with regular software, thus, most users inadvertently install Surf-N-Block with free software downloaded from freeware download websites.
After infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, this bogus app displays a variety of intrusive online advertisements such as banner, coupon, pop-up, and in-text ads. There is a high probability that these generated ads will lead to rogue websites containing infectious content, thereby exposing your system to high-risk adware or malware infections.
Be aware that Surf-N-Block tracks users' Internet browsing activity and records different types of related information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, and operating system/browser types.
Some of these details might be personally identifiable, and therefore, the presence of Surf-N-Block on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. This application is identical to Halt-It, Safer-Surfer, Blockeru, and a long list of other rogue extensions developed and released by the same company.
All claim to provide an identical feature (safer Internet browsing), however, none provide any real value - they display intrusive online advertisements and share collected information with third parties to generate revenue. We recommend that you uninstall Surf-N-Block adware from your system immediately.
Commonly, apps owned by this company are distributed using small 'download applications' (also called 'installers', 'download managers', 'download clients', 'download tools', and so on) employed by freeware download websites such as downloads.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com.
These sites monetize their traffic and free services via download apps, which offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser plug-ins together with regular software. Despite these claims, advertised apps are usually categorized as adware or malware.
Many users do not pay enough attention when downloading free software and inadvertently accept these offers, thereby exposing the system to risk of infection. To avoid this situation, closely analyse each step of the free software download procedure and opt-out of any third party software included.
Furthermore, perform installation of downloaded applications using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any bundled programs listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If you have installed Surf-N-Block, and you observe intrusive advertisements while surfing the Internet, the following guide will help you to eliminate this problem from your system.
