Blockeru Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Blockeru?
The Blockeru browser extension supposedly improves Internet browsing safety by preventing users from encountering websites containing adult, and other similar, content. This functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, Blockeru is classed as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
A deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) is used in Blockeru adware distribution and is one of the main reasons for these negative associations.
Following Blockeru infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, users will observe intrusive online advertisements such as banner, pop-up, coupons, and in-text ads. These displayed advertisements can redirect to dubious websites, and therefore, clicking them exposes your computer to risk of infection.
Blockeru adware collects various Internet browsing-related information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic locations), websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, browser/operating system types, and other collected data that may be personally identifiable.
Be aware that information tracking can cause serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to uninstall Blockeru from your system. There are many rogue applications similar or identical to Blockeru including Screen Flip, Shield-ren, and ArcadeTwist.
Adware-type applications such as these claim to enable a wide range of useful features to enhance the Internet browsing experience, however, like Blockeru they provide no real value - rather than providing any significant value, they display intrusive online advertisements and share collected data with third parties to generate revenue.
Typically, Blockeru, and other similar apps, are distributed via small programs called 'installers' (also called 'download managers', 'download clients', etc.) on freeware download websites such as soft32.com, softonic.com, and downloads.com.
These websites monetize their traffic and free services through installers that offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') applications together with the chosen software. Despite these promises, the advertised apps are often categorized as adware or malware.
To avoid such computer infections, closely inspect each and step of the free software download procedure and ensure that no additional programs are included.
Furthermore, applications downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. If you have installed Blockeru adware, the following guidelines will help you to eliminate this problem from your system.
