Knowledge Gains Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Knowledge Gains?
Created by SuperWeb LLC, Knowledge Gains is a dubious browser plug-in claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling features such as coupons and comparison shopping. This browser extension may seem legitimate and useful, however, Knowledge Gains is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
These associations are made due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party applications together with regular software).
After infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox without users' consent, Knowledge Gains generates various intrusive online advertisements including search, pop-up, interstitial, banner, coupon, transitional, and full-page ads. Some of these generated ads may redirect to dubious websites, thereby exposing your computer to adware or malware.
In addition, this PUP monitors users' Internet browsing activity and records various software and hardware information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic locations), unique identifier numbers, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered into search engines, etc.
This collected information may be personally identifiable, and therefore, the behavior of this plug-in can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. The developers of this rogue application have released hundreds of PUPs identical to Knowledge Gains. For instance, Package Return, Record Page, RoamingRate, and Assist Point also promise to enable identical features.
Neither Knowledge Gains, nor any of these other applications, provide any real value to the user - SuperWeb LLC releases these applications to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected data with third parties. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall Knowledge Gains from your system immediately.
Research shows that Knowledge Gains, and many other adware applications, are often distributed via small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as soft32.com, softonic.com, downloads.com, and so on.
These websites employ download clients to monetize their free services and traffic by offering installation of third party applications together with the chosen software. Although it is stated that these advertised apps are 'legitimate and virus-free', most are categorized as adware or malware.
To avoid computer infections, pay close attention when downloading free software and never accept offers to install additional programs. Furthermore, downloaded applications should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
If you have installed Knowledge Gains, and you observe intrusive online advertisements while surfing the Internet, the following removal guide will help you to eliminate this adware from your system.
