What is Shopymate?
Shopymate is a dubious plug-in developed and released by SuperWeb LLC. This add-on claims to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling features such as comparison shopping and coupons. This extension may appear legitimate, however, it is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) or adware.
Shopymate is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third-party applications together with the chosen software.
Once installed without users' consent, Shopymate generates various advertisements including coupons, search, transitional, banner, interstitial, pop-up, and full-page ads. These advertisements are likely to redirect you to bogus websites, and therefore, your computer may become infected.
In addition, Shopymate tracks users' Internet browsing activity and collects various information including IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, unique identifier numbers, and other recorded data, which can include personally identifiable details.
Therefore, having Shopymate installed on your system may result in serious privacy issues. Shopymate is just one of hundreds of identical rogue applications released by SuperWeb LLC. This company releases identical applications under different names (such as Blue Bulletin, Shop Easy, Assist Point, etc.) to prevent detection by legitimate anti-virus and anti-spyware suites.
Shopymate is developed to generate revenue by displaying ads and sharing collected data with third parties, and therefore, provides no significant value to the user. You are strongly advised to uninstall this adware from your system immediately.
As with most adware, Shopymate is commonly distributed using small programs called 'download clients' (also called 'installers', 'download managers', etc.) on freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, etc.
Download clients are used by these websites to monetize their free services and traffic by offering installation of third-party apps together with freeware. Promoted apps are often described as 'legitimate and virus-free', however, reckless download and installation usually results in adware or malware infections.
To avoid this situation, closely analyse each step of the free software download procedure and never accept offers to install additional apps.
Furthermore, installation of downloaded software should be performed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' options - this will reveal any PUPs listed for installation and allow you to decline them. If you have installed Shopymate, the following instructions will guide you through removal of this adware from your system.
