Eazy Zoom Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Eazy Zoom?
The Eazy Zoom browser extension claims to be a great tool to easily zoom any picture online. This plug-in may appear legitimate and useful, however, it is classed as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
As is the case for most regular adware, Eazy Zoom is distributed using the 'bundling' method - stealth installation of additional programs together with other software. Users often install this app inadvertently with free software downloadable from freeware download websites.
After installation on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Eazy Zoom generates intrusive online advertisements including coupon, in-text, transitional, comparison shopping, and other ads. These advertisements are likely to redirect users to bogus websites containing rogue content, thus exposing your computer to infection.
Furthermore, Eazy Zoom tracks and records Internet browsing activity and other information regarding your computer. For example: cookies, search queries, websites visited, pages viewed, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), etc.
It is highly probably that this collected data will include personally identifiable details. Therefore, the behavior of this extension may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft. Eazy Zoom is similar (in some cases identical) to other rogue applications distributed using the bundling method.
DoReMe, Boby Zoom, Dolphin Deals, and Fruit Basket are just some examples from many others. One feature common to these apps is that they provide no value to the user. The advertisements are delivered solely to generate revenue and share collected data with third parties.
For these reasons, you are strongly advised to eliminate Eazy Zoom from your system immediately.
Research shows that adware-type applications such as Eazy Zoom are commonly distributed using small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, and so on.
These websites employ download managers to monetize their traffic and free services by offering installation of advertised apps together with the chosen software. Promoted apps are often described as '100% legitimate and virus-free', however, they are mostly adware or malware infections.
To avoid inadvertent installation of PUPs, be attentive when downloading free software and ensure that no additional programs are included.
Furthermore, downloaded software should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any hidden apps listed for installation and allow you to cancel them. If you have installed Eazy Zoom, follow this removal guide to eliminate adware from your system.
