What is SpeedTray?
SpeedTray is an adware-type application that employs a deceptive free software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of extra software together with software chosen by the user. Additional applications are usually included when downloading free software from freeware download websites.
Therefore, lack of caution during the download process often results in installation of apps such as SpeedTray.
Once this rogue browser add-on installs on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent, various intrusive advertisements (for example, pop-up/under, in-text, display, etc.) are generated. These often lead to dubious websites containing potentially unwanted or even infectious content.
Furthermore, SpeedTray tracks users' Internet browsing activity on infected computers. Recorded information includes IP addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), websites visited, Internet searches, pages viewed, web beacons, cookies, etc.
This information may be personally identifiable and such behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. SpeedTray is similar to other rogue applications that claim to enhance the Internet browsing experience. Some examples are InterStat, ZoomIt, SmartOfferDisplay, and PaceItApp among many others.
None of these applications, including SpeedTray, provide any real value for the user, in fact, they are developed to generate revenue by the display of intrusive ads and sharing collected data with third parties. For these reasons, SpeedTray should be removed from your system immediately.
Popular free software download websites including download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, etc., employ small download programs (called 'installers', 'download managers', 'download clients', and so on) to monetize their traffic and free services.
Download programs offer installation of bundled applications that are said to be '100% legitimate and virus-free', however, these promoted apps are mostly classed as adware or malware. To prevent installation of SpeedTray, and other similar ads, closely follow each step of the free software download procedure and never accept installation of other programs.
In addition, always use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options when installing downloaded software - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out. The following instructions will guide you through the elimination of SpeedTray from your system.
