What is Wild West?
Wild West is a dubious application that employs a deceptive free software marketing method called 'bundling' to install on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent.
Bundling is a way for developers to distribute their software together with other programs, and therefore, most infections are caused by not paying close enough attention during download of free software from freeware download websites.
Wild West claims to enhance the Internet browsing experience by enabling various useful features such as coupons or comparison shopping, however, after successful installation, this application delivers intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity. For these reasons, Wild West is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Generated advertisements (banner, coupon, search, interstitial, transitional, etc.) may lead to high-risk adware or malware infections, and therefore, you should avoid clicking any suspicious ads displayed while surfing the Internet.
Wild West collects various software and hardware information that may be personally identifiable including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, and search queries (just some examples of the recorded information). Be aware that this behavior can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
The developers of Wild West (SuperWeb LLC) release identical applications (such as Useful Program, Mountain Bike, Nano Surfer, etc.) under different names to prevent detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus suites.
These add-ons (including Wild West) are useless to the user - they are developed simply to generate revenue by the display of advertisements and sharing collected data with third parties. You are strongly advised to uninstall Wild West from your system.
Today, most adware is distributed via small programs called 'download managers' (also called 'download clients', 'installers', and so on) used by freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, and soft32.com. Download managers are used by these websites as monetization tools for their traffic and free services.
Users are offered installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% legitimate') programs or browser plug-ins together with the chosen software. Thus, most of these installations lead to adware or malware infections.
To prevent installation of PUPs such as Wild West, each step of the freeware download procedure should be closely inspected and all additionally-included applications, unchecked.
Furthermore, installation of downloaded software should be performed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' options - these steps usually contain a list of bundled applications that must be declined. If you have installed Wild West, follow the instructions below to eliminate this software from your system.
