SaveLots Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is SaveLots?
SaveLots, a rogue browser extension, claims to save time and money by enabling features such as comparison shopping and coupons, and by displaying special deals/discounts available within online stores.
On initial inspection, this plug-in may seem legitimate and useful, however, SaveLots is considered to be adware, since this extension employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' permission.
Bundling is a way to stealthily distribute applications together with other software, and therefore, most of these infections are caused by reckless download of free software from freeware download websites. After successful infiltration, SaveLots generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
Information recorded by this browser add-on includes (but is not limited to) URLs visited, search queries, pages viewed, IP addresses (to determine users' geographic locations), and so on. Furthermore, SaveLots generates intrusive online advertisements including banner, pop-up, coupon, etc.
This information tracking may cause serious privacy issues and the generated ads can lead to further high-risk adware or malware infections. SaveLots is similar to other adware-type applications distributed using the bundling method. Examples include Breaking News Alert, SaveNewaAppz, and PastaQuotes among many others.
Neither SaveLots, nor any of these other applications, provide any significant value to the user - they are developed merely to generate revenue by the display of ads and sharing collected data with third parties. Therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate SaveLots from your Internet browsers.
Rogue plug-ins such as SaveLots are mostly distributed via small download programs (called 'installers', 'download managers', 'download clients', etc.) used by freeware download websites including softonic.com, download.com, and soft32.com.
Download programs are employed by these websites as free services and traffic monetization tools, since they offer installation of additional programs together with the chosen software. The advertised applications are said to be '100% legitimate and virus-free', however, careless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
To prevent this situation, closely inspect each step of the free software download procedure and click 'Decline' if installation of any additional programs is offered.
Furthermore, installation of downloaded software should be performed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Typical', 'Regular' or 'Quick' - this will reveal any additional applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
If you have installed SaveLots, and you observe intrusive online advertisements while surfing the Internet, follow the guide below to eliminate this dubious browser extension from your system.
