What is Gameo?
Developed by IronSource Ltd, Gameo is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to allow users to play various online games. This may seem legitimate and useful functionality, however, Gameo is categorized as adware.
The developers of this rogue application employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install Gameo on computer systems without users' permission. Bundling is a way to stealthily distribute applications together with other software, and therefore, most infiltrations are caused by careless download of software from freeware download websites.
After successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Gameo generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
Advertisements generated by Gameo include (but are not limited to) banner, pop-up/under, in-text, and other similar ads. It is highly probable that clicking advertisements displayed by this PUP will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since Gameo collects various software and hardware information including search queries entered into search engines (Yahoo, Google, Bing, etc.), URLs visited, pages viewed, IP addresses (to determine users' geo-locations), and other details.
This information tracking can cause serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and for these reasons, you are strongly advised to eliminate Gameo from your Internet browsers.
Gameo is similar to other rogue applications that employ bundling as an installation method. Examples include MyRadioPlayer, Useful Program, SuperText, and Webplayer among hundreds of others.
Neither Gameo, nor any of these other applications, are useful to the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected data with third parties.
Today, most adware-type applications are distributed via small download programs (called 'installers', 'download managers', 'download clients', etc.) on freeware download websites including soft32.com, download.com, and softonic.com
