SmartShopper Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is SmartShopper?
SmartShopper is a dubious browser add-on that claims to save time and money by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and displaying special deals and discounts available on shopping websites. This plug-in may seem legitimate and useful, however, SmartShopper is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
These associations are made due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' employed by SmartShopper to install on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent.
Bundling allows developers to distribute their applications together with other programs, and therefore, users commonly install SmartShopper inadvertently when downloading free software from freeware download websites. After successful infiltration, this PUP tracks users' Internet browsing activity and delivers unwanted advertisements.
SmartShopper generates numerous intrusive online advertisements such as coupons, comparison shopping, in-text, pop-up, and banner ads. Furthermore, this plug-in collects various software and hardware information including IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered, and other similar details.
The presence of SmartShopper on your system may lead to high-risk adware or malware infections (when clicking ads generated by this plug-in) and serious privacy issues. There are many applications similar to SmartShopper (for example, Dealz, PrestoSavings, and Deals Finder), however, none of these (including SmartShopper) provide the features promised.
They are developed to generate revenue by the display of third party advertisements and sharing collected information with third parties. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to eliminate SmartShopper from your Internet browsers immediately.
Close examination of SmartShopper reveals that it is mostly distributed using small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites. These websites employ download clients to monetize their free services and traffic by offering installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') applications or browser extensions together with the chosen software.
Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections. To avoid installation of SmartShopper, or other similar PUPs, closely observe the free software download procedure and uncheck all additional applications listed for installation.
Furthermore, if you have installed downloaded software, select the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. If your system is infected with SmartShopper, read the removal guide provided and eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
