What is Winner Media Player?
Created by Winner Solutions LLC, Winner Media Player is a rogue application claiming to allow users to play various video and audio files. On initial inspection, this feature may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that Winner Media Player is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
These associations are made due to a deceptive software marketing method called bundling (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) employed by Winner Media Player to install on Internet browsers without users' permission.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Winner media Player diminishes browser performance and generates numerous intrusive online advertisements such as banner, interstitial, transitional, and pop-up ads.
Furthermore, this PUP continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording various software and hardware information including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine geographic locations), browser type and data (cookies, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered), operating system type, Internet service providers, and other similar data.
Although Winner Media Player does not pose any direct virus threat, clicking advertisements generated by this rogue application may lead to further computer infections. Additionally, information tracking such as this may lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
There are many applications similar to Winner Media Player that also use bundling as an installation method. Examples include CostMin, Rich Media Player, and Feven. None of these (including Winner Media Player) provide any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected data with third parties.
Most popular freeware websites employ download managers as free services and traffic monetization tools, since they offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser add-ons together with the chosen software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
To prevent installation of this adware, decline offers to install additional programs when downloading freeware. Furthermore, if you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
If you have installed Winner Media Player, and you see intrusive ads while surfing the Internet, read the provided removal guide and uninstall this adware from your Internet browsers.
