How to uninstall the DailyLocalGuide browser hijacker?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is hp.myway.com?
Developed by Mindspark Interactive Network Inc, DailyLocalGuide is a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application) endorsed as a tool supposedly capable of providing information about currently available local services and other similar content.
This app may seem as a useful and legitimate piece of software, yet it operates by making modifications to browser settings in order to promote hp.myway.com - a fake search engine. Due to this, it is also classified as a browser hijacker. Additionally, DailyLocalGuide has data tracking abilities, which are employed to spy on users' browsing activity.
Browser hijackers reassign browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs - to the addresses of fake web searchers. DailyLocalGuide makes these alterations to browsers as well.
To elaborate how this affects the browsing experience, with DailyLocalGuide installed: every browser tab/window opened and web search done via the URL bar - redirect to hp.myway.com. Fake search engines are rarely able to provide search results, so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing and other legitimate ones.
Even if illegitimate web searchers can generate search results, they tend to be inaccurate and/or promote untrustworthy and malicious websites. Furthermore, browser hijackers can undo any changes users attempt to make to their browsers and/or restrict/deny access to the browsers' settings outright.
Therefore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without eliminating the software hijacking it. As mentioned in the introduction, DailyLocalGuide can track data. It monitors browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details).
Browser hijacker developers monetize the gathered data by sharing it with and/or selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, presence of data-tracking software on devices can result in serious privacy issues, financial losses and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user privacy, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

HomeHelpGuide, EasyWebPagePrint, RecipeSearch and Test iNet Speed are some examples of other browser hijackers developed by Mindspark. They appear legitimate and offer a broad range of "handy" functionalities. However, the promised functions are usually nonoperational.
In fact, this applies to nearly all PUAs. The sole purpose of unwanted apps is to generate profit for the developers; to users - they have no real value and may cause severe problems. Instead of delivering on any promises, PUAs can hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private data.
How did DailyLocalGuide install on my computer?
Select PUAs (e.g. DailyLocalGuide) have "official" promotional sites, from which they can be downloaded. These applications can also be downloaded/installed together with other programs. This deceptive marketing method of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is termed "bundling".
Rushed download/installation processes (e.g. ignored terms, skipped steps and sections, etc.) increase the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system. Intrusive adverts proliferate PUAs as well. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to make stealthy downloads/installations.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to research software before download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Since untrustworthy download channels, e.g. unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders - commonly offer harmful and/or bundled content.
When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, study all available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out from additional apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive advertisements appear ordinary, however they redirect to questionable sites (e.g. adult-dating, gambling, pornography, and so on).
In case of encounters with ads and/or redirects of this type, the system must be checked and all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - removed from it immediately. If your computer is already infected with DailyLocalGuide, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
