PriceCongress Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is PriceCongress?
Developed by a company of the same name (PriceCongress Ltd or SimplyTech Ltd), PriceCongress is a potentially unwanted application claiming to improve users' online shopping experience and saving time and money by providing coupons, enabling comparison shopping, and displaying the latest special deals/discounts available on website stores.
The developers of this rogue browser add-on employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install PriceCongress on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome) without users' consent.
Bundling is a way to stealthily distribute applications together with other software, and for this reason, most infections are caused by careless free software downloads from freeware download websites.
Although PriceCongress appears to deliver useful and legitimate functionality, be aware that it is categorized as adware, since after successful browser infiltration, it tracks users' Internet browsing activity and generates intrusive online ads.
There is a long list of intrusive advertisements generated by this dubious application including, for example, coupons, sponsored links, various deals, photographic, and other graphics-related advertisements. It is highly probable that clicking these advertisements will cause high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored since PriceCongress records various information that is likely to be personally identifiable including Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (to determine users' locations), unique identifier numbers, computer and operating system types, Internet service providers, and other details.
This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or identity theft, and for this reason, you are strongly advised to uninstall PriceCongress from your Internet browsers.
PriceCongress is similar to other PUPs such as SaveMass, DiscountApp, and SecureSave. Neither PriceCongress, nor any of these other browser plug-ins, provide any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads.
Research also reveals that adware such as PriceCongress is mostly distributed on freeware download websites (for example, download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com).
Most popular freeware download websites employ small download programs called 'download managers' or 'download clients' to monetize their free services by offering installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser extensions together with the chosen free software.
Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware frequently results in adware or malware infections. Installation of PriceCongress or other similar PUPs can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download process and never accepting installation of any additional programs offered.
Furthermore, select the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options when installing software downloaded from the Internet - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to opt out. Internet users who have already installed PriceCongress adware should read the following removal instructions to eliminate it from their Internet browsers.
