StartSavin Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is StartSavin?
Created by a company called Engaging Apps, the StartSavin rogue browser plug-in claims to save time and money by enabling comparison shopping, coupons, and displaying special deals/discounts available within online stores. Although this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that StartSavin is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted application.
The developers of this rogue browser add-on employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to stealthily install StartSavin on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' permission.
Following successful infiltration, StartSavin generates numerous intrusive online advertisements including banner, pop-under, coupon, interstitial, sponsored link, and targeted video ads. Clicking these advertisements is likely to cause high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, StartSavin continually tracks users' Internet browsing activity by recording various information, which may be personally identifiable, for example, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, geographic locations, URLs visited, pages viewed, cookies, and other similar details.
This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate StartSavin from your Internet browsers.
There are many rogue browser add-ons similar to StartSavin such as Price-Slicer, Gigantic-Savings, Savings-Hero, and iDeals. These extensions are useless to the user since their main purpose is to generate income by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Internet users often inadvertently install adware such as StartSavin when downloading free software via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites (including download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com amongst many others).
These websites employ download managers as their free services monetization tool since they offer installation of advertised 'virus-free' browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware frequently results in adware or malware infections.
To avoid this situation, be attentive during the download of free software and decline any offers to install additional programs.
Furthermore, when installing downloaded software, choose the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any bundled applications and allow you to remove them from the installation list.
Internet users who have already installed StartSavin, and observe intrusive online advertisements, should read the following removal guide to uninstall this adware from their Internet browsers.
