Lights Out Ads

What is Lights Out?
Developed by Deals Interactive Media LLC, Lights Out is a rogue browser extension claiming to enable users to adjust computer screen lights while watching online videos. This functionality may seem legitimate, however, be aware that the Lights Out add-on is categorized as a potentially unwanted application or adware.
The developers of this rogue browser plug-in employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen free software) to install on Internet browsers without users' permission.
After successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome, Lights Out monitors users' Internet browsing activity and generates intrusive online advertisements.
These intrusive advertisements include banner, interstitial, in-text, text-link, and pop-up ads. It is highly probable that clicking these advertisements will cause high-risk adware or malware infections. In addition, this rogue browser add-on continually tracks users' Internet browsing activity by recording various software and hardware information, which may be personally identifiable.
For example: operating systems, browser types, URLs visited, pages viewed, cookies, IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, geographic locations, language settings, and other similar details. This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and for this reason, you are strongly advised to eliminate Lights Out from your Internet browsers.
There are many similar rogue browser extensions (including Movie Wizard, PC Doctor, Sonic Search, etc.) claiming to improve users' Internet browsing experience by adding useful functions. Neither Lights Out, nor any of these other plug-ins add any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Most users infect their computers with adware when downloading free software via small programs called 'download clients' on freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, and soft32.com These websites employ download clients to monetize their free services by offering installation of promoted 'virus-free' browser extensions together with the chosen free software.
Thus, careless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections. This situation can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download process and clicking 'Decline' when installation of any additional programs is offered.
If you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Regular' - this will reveal any bundled applications and allow you to remove them from the installation list. Internet users who have already installed Lights Out adware should follow this removal guide to eliminate the extension from their Internet browsers.
