Disturbicons Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Disturbicons?
Created by a company called Big Water Applications LLC, Disturbicons is a rogue browser add-on claiming to enhance users' Internet browsing experience by enabling exclusive emoticons. This may seem legitimate functionality, however, be aware that Disturbicons is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted application.
The developers of this company employ a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional applications together with the chosen software) to install Disturbicons on Internet browsers without users' consent.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, Disturbicons generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
These intrusive advertisements includes banner, pop-up, text-link, interstitial, and in-text ads and are likely to cause high-risk adware or malware infections. In addition, users' Internet browsing is continually monitored, since this rogue browser add-on collects various information, which may be personally identifiable.
For example: operating systems, browser types, cookies, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, URLs visited, pages viewed, geographic locations, and other similar details. This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate Disturbicons from your Internet browsers.
Disturbicons is similar to other rogue browser add-ons (such as Zombie Alert, Mood Tube, and Radsteroids), which claim to improve the quality of users' Internet browsing experience by enabling useful functionality, however, rather than delivering any benefits, these plug-ins present users with intrusive ads.
Most adware is distributed via free software 'download managers' used by freeware download websites such as soft32.com, softonic.com, download.com, amongst many others. Download managers are used to monetize these websites' free services by offering installation of promoted 'virus-free' browser extensions together with the chosen free software.
Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections. To prevent installation of Disturbicons, or other similar adware, be attentive and click 'Decline' when installation of any additional programs is offered.
If you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any hidden applications and allow you to remove them from the installation list. Internet users who have already installed Disturbicons should follow this removal guide and eliminate it from their Internet browsers.
