SerialTrunc Virus

What is SerialTrunc?
The SerialTrunc rogue browser plug-in claims to improve the quality of users' Internet browsing experience by enabling comparison shopping, coupons, website trust ratings, and similar functions. On initial inspection, SerialTrunc may seem a legitimate add-on, however, users should be aware that the plug-in is considered to be adware.
Created by SuperWeb LLC, it is optimized for Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. SerialTrunc uses a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' employed to stealthily install the software on users' browsers.
After successful infiltration, the plug-in generates various types of intrusive advertisements including search, banner, text link, interstitial, transitional, and full page ads.
In addition, SerialTrunc tracks users' Internet browsing activity - recording various information such as IP addresses, URLs visited, search queries, pages viewed, unique identifier numbers, and other software and hardware information. The presence of this adware on your system may lead to serious privacy issues or malware infections.
The developers of SuperWeb have released a large number of browser plug-ins identical to SerialTrunc including, for example, Maucampo, Melondrea, and Jotzey. This company intentionally releases identical browser extensions under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus programs.
None of these plug-ins add any real value for the user - their actual purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Research shows that users commonly install adware similar to SerialTrunc via 'download managers' within freeware download websites. Most current freeware download websites use download managers to monetize their free services.
Download managers offer installation of advertised browser extensions along with the chosen free software, and therefore, reckless installation of free software may result in adware infections.
To prevent installation of SerialTrunc, or other similar potentially unwanted applications, express caution when downloading freeware and decline any offered installation of additional applications.
During the installation of downloaded software, choose the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled applications within the freeware setup.
Users who have already installed SerialTrunc and observe "Ads by SerialTrunc", "Powered by SerialTrunc", and "SerialTrunc Deals", when browsing the Internet, should follow this removal guide to eliminate adware from their Internet browser/s.
