What is LPD BM.I POLIZEI?
The LPD BM.I POLIZEI message is a ransomware infection targeting PC users predominantly from Austria. This is a scam created and distributed by cyber criminals. The purpose of this deceptive screen locker is to trick unsuspecting PC users into paying a bogus 100 Euro fine. The ransomware originates from a family called Reveton. Scam messages from this family are translated into many languages and target different countries using adapted names and graphics of local authorities. The message that appears within this screen locker states that computer users have allegedly been downloading copyrighted software, video, and music files, or have been watching pornography. Thus a demand is made to pay the 100 Euro fine to unblock users' computers and avoid criminals charges.
In fact, no authorities use such methods to collect fines for any law violations - this is a scam created by cyber criminals who make money from those who fall for such trickery and pay the bogus fine. These ransomware infections are localized. The same infection on a computer located in the USA appears in English as if sent from the Internet Crime Complaint Center. If you see this ransomware (screenshot below) or similar messages that block your computer screen, your computer is infected and you should not pay any fines. No international authorities use a screen locking method to collect fines for copyright or any other law violations. Note that there are several ransomware families targeting computer users from Austria.
