How to eliminate Woiap WApp unwanted application from the operating system

Also Known As: Woiap WApp potentially unwanted application
Damage level: Medium

What kind of application is Woiap WApp?

Woiap WApp is a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application) discovered by our researchers while analyzing a rogue installation setup. This installer also included the fake "Save to Google Drive" browser extension. Note that setups of this kind could contain other suspicious and possibly dangerous software.

PUAs usually possess harmful capabilities. Upon examination, we learned that Woiap WApp drops the Legion Loader malware onto systems. Hence, its presence on a device can lead to multiple system infections and other severe issues.

Woiap WApp overview

The Woiap WApp unwanted application operates by dropping other content onto devices – therefore, it is classed as a dropper. This program has been observed infiltrating the Legion Loader malware. The primary function of this malware is to load additional malicious software or components onto devices.

Legion Loader has been noted installing trojans (backdoors), ransomware, information stealers, and cryptominers onto compromised machines.

This malware has also infiltrated malicious Google Chrome browser extensions that collect browsing-related data, steal email contents, and make modifications to browsers to turn them into HTTP proxies that abuse Internet resources (proxyware).

As mentioned in the introduction, the setup carrying Woiap WApp that we inspected also included the fake "Save to Google Drive" browser extension. Keep in mind that this PUA could be promoted by other installers or alongside different software.

In summary, the presence of software like Woiap WApp on devices can lead to multiple system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Potentially unwanted application examples

Kowi SAppTraw DappDisoaq AppStealthGuard, and Joas App are merely some of our latest articles on PUAs. Unwanted apps typically have harmful capabilities, commonly including data tracking, browser hijacking, and displaying intrusive ads.

This software is often presented as legitimate and innocuous. It can also offer a broad range of "useful" functionalities, which seldom operate as advertised, and in most cases – they do not work at all.

Remember that even if an app or a browser extension functions exactly as indicated by its promotional material – that is not definitive proof of either legitimacy or safety.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

We discovered Woiap WApp in an installer promoted by a deceptive webpage. Our researchers found it through a redirect produced by a Torrenting website that utilizes rogue advertising networks.

Aside from such networks, redirects to PUA-endorsing pages can be caused by intrusive adverts, spam browser notifications, misspelled URLs, and installed adware.

"Bundling" is also used to distribute PUAs. This technique entails packing regular program installation setups with unwanted/malicious additions.

The threat of unintentionally permitting access for bundled content into the device is increased by downloading from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and free file-hosting sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by rushing through installations (e.g., ignoring terms, using "Easy/Quick" settings, etc.).

Additionally, unwanted software is proliferated by intrusive advertisements. Once clicked on, some of these ads can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

We strongly recommend researching software and downloading it only from official/trustworthy sources. When installing, we advise reading terms, exploring possible options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplementary apps, extensions, features, etc.

Additionally, we urge caution when browsing since fraudulent and dangerous online content usually appears genuine and harmless. For example, despite their innocuous appearance – intrusive advertisements redirect to highly questionable websites (e.g., scam-promoting, pornography, adult dating, gambling, etc.).

In case of continuous encounters with such adverts/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
