Fake "Dotmoovs" platform overview

Dotmoovs (dotmoovs.com) is a platform that merges sports, AI technology, and cryptocurrency, enabling remote peer-to-peer sports competitions. Using AI to score sports tricks through smartphone videos, it allows athletes and fans to connect and compete, with rewards facilitated by its $MOOV cryptocurrency.

The fake website, dotmoovsv2.pages[.]dev, is designed to appear like the real one and trick visitors into connecting their cryptocurrency wallets. If users connect their wallets, they unknowingly activate a malicious tool known as a cryptocurrency drainer. This drainer can automatically transfer crypto holdings from the victims' wallet to the scammer's.

Once funds are stolen in this crypto scam, victims typically cannot recover them, as transactions on blockchain networks are both untraceable and irreversible. These scams often lead to substantial financial losses, and recovering assets through traditional channels is generally not possible.

In addition, victims may face security risks if they provide sensitive information, highlighting the importance of caution when online and on web pages requesting to connect crypto wallets.

Similar scams in general

Cryptocurrency drainer scams often lure victims by promising fake rewards, like free tokens, to entice them into connecting their wallets. The scam's main goal is to drain the victims' crypto assets once access is granted. Examples of such scams include "Permaswap Staking", and "SOMO Registration".

These scams can appear legitimate, sometimes even imitating well-known crypto platforms, making it crucial for users to verify pages and be cautious with offers involving wallet connections.

How did I open a scam website?

It is common for crypto-related scams to be promoted via hijacked WordPress or fake and hacked X/Twitter, Facebook, or other social media accounts. Scam pages can also be encountered while visiting sites tied to rogue ad networks, which are commonly used by torrent sites, illegal streaming platforms, adult websites, and similar sources.

Users may also land on scam sites after clicking unreliable ads, pop-ups, buttons, or misleading links on questionable websites, as well as fraudulent links received via email. Adware is also used to promote shady pages, including those hosting scams.

How to avoid visiting scam pages?

Only download software from reputable or official sources, and scan your computer regularly for malware. Avoid opening links or attachments in unexpected or irrelevant emails and messages from unknown sources. Keep your system and apps up to date, and use trusted security software.

Do not interact with ads or pop-ups on questionable websites, and decline any requests to receive notifications from them. Additionally, avoid visiting torrent sites and other pages of this kind that could expose you to scams. If your computer is already infected with unwanted apps, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to identify a pop-up scam?

Pop-up windows with various fake messages are a common type of lures cybercriminals use. They collect sensitive personal data, trick Internet users into calling fake tech support numbers, subscribe to useless online services, invest in shady cryptocurrency schemes, etc.

While in the majority of cases these pop-ups don't infect users' devices with malware, they can cause direct monetary loss or could result in identity theft.

Cybercriminals strive to create their rogue pop-up windows to look trustworthy, however, scams typically have the following characteristics:

  • Spelling mistakes and non-professional images - Closely inspect the information displayed in a pop-up. Spelling mistakes and unprofessional images could be a sign of a scam.
  • Sense of urgency - Countdown timer with a couple of minutes on it, asking you to enter your personal information or subscribe to some online service.
  • Statements that you won something - If you haven't participated in a lottery, online competition, etc., and you see a pop-up window stating that you won.
  • Computer or mobile device scan - A pop-up window that scans your device and informs of detected issues - is undoubtedly a scam; webpages cannot perform such actions.
  • Exclusivity - Pop-up windows stating that only you are given secret access to a financial scheme that can quickly make you rich.
