More about SharpRhino

RATs are malicious programs that allow cybercriminals to gain remote control over a victim's computer. They can be used for various malicious purposes, such as exfiltrating files, capturing screenshots, and logging keystrokes. Typically, cybercriminals use RATs to steal sensitive information (e.g., login credentials and credit card details) or deliver other types of malware.

SharpRhino is known to be used to launch ransomware attacks. Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts files and provides a ransom note containing instructions on how to pay the attackers for decryption. Before encrypting files, cybercriminals behind ransomware attacks deployed via SharpRhino steal data from the infected devices.

Additionally, SharpRhino uses a certain persistence method. To ensure the malware keeps running even after a restart, it changes system settings within the "Run\UpdateWindowsKey" registry. This change creates a shortcut to a file named "Microsoft.AnyKey.exe", which is a disguised version of the malware. This file is used to hide the malware and make it harder to detect.

RATs in general

Remote Access Trojan is malicious software that allows attackers to remotely control and monitor an infected computer. It can designed to steal sensitive data, manipulate files, and carry out other malicious activities while remaining hidden. RATs are commonly used for data theft and carrying out further cybercrimes (e.g., deploying malware).

Examples of different RATs are Cash, Noodle, and SpiceRAT.

How did SharpRhino infiltrate my computer?

SharpRhino is distributed by disguising it as a trusted tool called AngryIP. The goal is to trick victims into downloading and running the malware while thinking it is the genuine installer. SharpRhino malware is spread using a fake website that closely mimics the AngryIP download website.

Other methods used for delivering malware include sending malicious files or links via email, exploiting software vulnerabilities, creating malicious ads, employing compromised (or deceptive) websites, hiding malware in pirated software (or cracking tools), and using channels like P2P networks, third-party downloaders, free file hosting sites, etc.

How to avoid installation of malware?

Avoid using questionable sources when downloading software, and never download pirated software or tools designed to bypass activation. Always use official pages or app stores. Do not trust advertisements, pop-ups, buttons, and links on shady websites. Also, examine emails before opening files or links in them, especially when emails are unexpected and from unknown addresses.

Keep the operating system and installed programs up to date, and regularly scan your computer for threats using a reputable security tool. If you believe that your computer is already infected, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate infiltrated malware.

How to remove malware manually?

Manual malware removal is a complicated task - usually it is best to allow antivirus or anti-malware programs to do this automatically. To remove this malware we recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.

If you wish to remove malware manually, the first step is to identify the name of the malware that you are trying to remove. Here is an example of a suspicious program running on a user's computer:

Malware process running in the Task Manager

If you checked the list of programs running on your computer, for example, using task manager, and identified a program that looks suspicious, you should continue with these steps:

manual malware removal step 1Download a program called Autoruns. This program shows auto-start applications, Registry, and file system locations:

manual malware removal step 2Restart your computer into Safe Mode:

Windows XP and Windows 7 users: Start your computer in Safe Mode. Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart, click OK. During your computer start process, press the F8 key on your keyboard multiple times until you see the Windows Advanced Option menu, and then select Safe Mode with Networking from the list.

Extract Autoruns.zip archive and run Autoruns.exe application

manual malware removal step 4In the Autoruns application, click "Options" at the top and uncheck "Hide Empty Locations" and "Hide Windows Entries" options. After this procedure, click the "Refresh" icon.

Refresh Autoruns application results

manual malware removal step 5Check the list provided by the Autoruns application and locate the malware file that you want to eliminate.

You should write down its full path and name. Note that some malware hides process names under legitimate Windows process names. At this stage, it is very important to avoid removing system files. After you locate the suspicious program you wish to remove, right click your mouse over its name and choose "Delete".

Delete malware in Autoruns

After removing the malware through the Autoruns application (this ensures that the malware will not run automatically on the next system startup), you should search for the malware name on your computer. Be sure to enable hidden files and folders before proceeding. If you find the filename of the malware, be sure to remove it.

Search for malware and delete it

Reboot your computer in normal mode. Following these steps should remove any malware from your computer. Note that manual threat removal requires advanced computer skills. If you do not have these skills, leave malware removal to antivirus and anti-malware programs.

These steps might not work with advanced malware infections. As always it is best to prevent infection than try to remove malware later. To keep your computer safe, install the latest operating system updates and use antivirus software. To be sure your computer is free of malware infections, we recommend scanning it with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
