How to remove NodeResolution adware from your Mac
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What kind of application is NodeResolution?
Our researchers found NodeResolution while reviewing new file submissions to the VirusTotal website. After analyzing this application, we determined that it is advertising-supported software (adware). NodeResolution is part of the AdLoad malware family.
NodeResolution adware overview
Adware generates revenue for its developers through advertising. This is typically achieved by placing advertisements on various interfaces, such as visited websites, desktops, or others.
Advertising-supported software might not deliver intrusive ad campaigns if the browser/system or user geolocation is incompatible, specific sites are not visited, or other conditions are unsuitable. Regardless of whether NodeResolution displays ads – it threatens device and user safety.
Adware-delivered adverts can promote online scams, unreliable/harmful software, and even malware. When clicked on, some intrusive advertisements can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user permission.
Keep in mind that any genuine content encountered via these ads is most likely endorsed by scammers who abuse its affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.
While AdLoad applications often have browser-hijacking abilities – NodeResolution did not exhibit such behavior during testing.
Advertising-supported software usually has data-tracking functionalities, and this might apply to NodeResolution. Targeted information may include: browsing and search engine histories, browser cookies, log-in credentials, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, and so forth. This sensitive data can be sold to third-parties or otherwise abused for profit.
In summary, adware is associated with the following threats – system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Adware examples
GuideTable, ExplorerProgress, and OriginalParameter are merely a couple of our latest articles on adware. Usually, advertising-supported software appears harmless and offers handy functionalities. However, these functions rarely work as promised, and in most cases – they do not work at all.
Note that even if a piece of software operates exactly as indicated by its promotional material – that is not irrefutable proof of either legitimacy or safety.
How did NodeResolution install on my computer?
Adware is endorsed on legitimate-looking promotional pages and scam sites. They are most commonly accessed through redirects caused by intrusive adverts, websites employing rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, misspelled URLs, and installed adware (with the ability to force-open webpages).
Additionally, advertising-supported software can be bundled with ordinary programs. The risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system is increased by downloading from untrustworthy channels (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by treating installations with negligence (e.g., ignoring terms, using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.).
Intrusive advertisements proliferate adware as well. Some of these ads can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations upon being clicked.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading it from official/verified sources. Another recommendation is to be vigilant when installing programs, e.g., by reading terms, exploring available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplementary apps, extensions, features, etc.
We advise being careful while browsing since fake and dangerous online content typically appears legitimate and innocuous. For example, intrusive advertisements may look harmless – however, they redirect to unreliable and questionable sites (e.g., gambling, scam-promoting, adult dating, etc.).
In case of continuous encounters with such adverts/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with NodeResolution, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
