How to remove the ConnectedChannel adware-type app from your Mac

Also Known As: Ads by ConnectedChannel
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What kind of application is ConnectedChannel?

ConnectedChannel is an adware-type application discovered by our research team during a routine investigation of file submissions to the VirusTotal platform. This app is part of the AdLoad malware family. ConnectedChannel operates by running intrusive ad campaigns and may possess other harmful capabilities.

ConnectedChannel adware

ConnectedChannel adware overview

Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It is designed to display ads on various interfaces, such as visited websites, desktops, or others.

Software within this classification might not deliver advert campaigns if the browser/system or user geolocation is incompatible, specific sites are not visited, or other conditions are unsuitable. However, regardless of whether ConnectedChannel displays advertisements – it endangers device integrity and user privacy.

Adware-delivered adverts commonly endorse online scams, untrustworthy/hazardous software, and potential malware. Some intrusive ads can even be triggered (i.e., by being clicked) to execute scripts that perform stealthy downloads/installations.

Note that while genuine products/services may be encountered via these advertisements – they are unlikely to be promoted by their developers or other official parties. It is most probable that this promotion is motivated by the acquisition of illegitimate commissions through the abuse of the endorsed content's affiliate programs.

AdLoad applications often have browser-hijacking abilities – however, ConnectedChannel did not exhibit these traits during our analysis.

Furthermore, advertising-supported software typically gathers private information, and this might apply to ConnectedChannel. Targeted data may include: browsing and search engine histories, browser cookies, log-in credentials, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, etc. This vulnerable information can be sold to third-parties or otherwise abused for profit.

To summarize, software like ConnectedChannel may cause system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Adware examples

AnalyzeServiceStandartServer, and ProcessorSelect are just a couple examples of adware we have analyzed recently. Advertising-supported software tends to appear legitimate and innocuous. It may also offer various handy functionalities, which are usually nonoperational.

Keep in mind that even if a piece of software works as indicated by its promotional material – that is not a guarantee of legitimacy or safety.

How did ConnectedChannel install on my computer?

Adware can be bundled with (packed alongside) ordinary programs. The threat of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the device is increased by downloading from dubious sources (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by rushing through installation processes (e.g., using "Easy/Quick" settings, etc.).

Furthermore, adware can have "official" promotional pages, and it is endorsed on scam websites. Users primarily access these webpages via redirects generated by sites utilizing rogue advertising networks, intrusive adverts, mistyped URLs, spam browser notifications, or installed adware (with browser force-opening abilities).

Advertising-supported software is also proliferated by intrusive advertisements. Once clicked on, some of the ads can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user consent.

How to avoid installation of adware?

We strongly advise researching software and downloading only from official/trustworthy channels. When installing, it is essential to read terms, investigate available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, and opt out of all additional apps, extensions, features, etc.

Fake and dangerous online content usually appears legitimate and innocuous – therefore, it is important to exercise caution while browsing. For example, while intrusive adverts may look harmless – they redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., scam-promoting, adult dating, gambling, pornography, etc.).

If you keep encountering advertisements and/or redirects of this kind, check the device and immediately remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with ConnectedChannel, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
