How to eliminate Identification.app adware from your Mac
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What kind of application is Identification.app?
Our research team discovered Identification.app during a routine investigation of new file submissions to the VirusTotal site. Upon inspection, we determined that this application is advertising-supported software (adware). This app is part of the Pirrit adware family.
Identification.app adware overview
Adware is designed to generate revenue for its developers by feeding users with unwanted and potentially dangerous ads. This third-party graphical content is displayed on visited websites and/or other interfaces.
Note that certain conditions may be necessary for advertising-supported software to run intrusive advertisement campaigns (e.g., compatible browser/system specs, visits to particular sites, etc.). However, even if Identification.app does not deliver adverts – it remains a threat to device/user safety.
Adware-displayed ads primarily promote online scams, unreliable/harmful software, and even malware. Some are capable of performing stealthy downloads/installations upon being clicked.
Keep in mind that any genuine content encountered through these advertisements is most likely endorsed in this fashion by scammers abusing its affiliate programs to acquire illegitimate commissions.
While Pirrit applications commonly have browser-hijacking functionalities – we did not observe these qualities during our analysis of the Identification.app adware.
It must be mentioned that Identification.app likely collects vulnerable information, as data tracking is standard for software within this classification.
Information of interest may include: URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, etc. The gathered data can then be shared with and/or sold to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, the presence of advertising-supported software like Identification.app on devices may result in system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
Waste.app, Repressionist.app, Plebeianness.app, Cucullate, and Laser.app are just some examples of adware we have examined recently.
Software that is classed as such tends to appear legitimate and harmless. It can also offer a broad range of "useful" functionalities. However, these features rarely work as promised, and in most cases – they are completely nonoperational.
It must be stressed that even if an application or a browser extension works exactly as indicated by its promotional material – that is not irrefutable proof of either legitimacy or safety.
How did Identification.app install on my computer?
Adware can be bundled (packed together) with regular programs. Downloading from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and third-party websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and treating installations with negligence (e.g., skipping steps, using "Quick/Easy" settings, etc.) – increase the threat of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the device.
Additionally, adware can have "official" promotional pages, and it is endorsed on deceptive/scam sites. Most visitors access them via redirects caused by websites employing rogue advertising networks, misspelled URLs, intrusive ads, spam browser notifications, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
Intrusive advertisements also spread advertising-supported software. Once clicked on, some of these adverts can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user consent.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We highly recommend researching software and downloading it only from official/trustworthy sources. Installation processes must be treated with care, e.g., by reading terms, investigating available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplementary apps, tools, extensions, features, etc.
We also advise being cautious while browsing since fraudulent and malicious online content usually appears legitimate and innocuous. For example, intrusive ads may look harmless – yet redirect to unreliable and questionable sites (e.g., scam-promoting, adult dating, gambling, pornography, etc.).
In case of continuous encounters with such adverts/redirects, inspect the device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Identification.app, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
