How to remove the VideoEthernetInteger adware and the ads it delivers

Also Known As: Ads by VideoEthernetInteger
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What kind of application is VideoEthernetInteger?

We discovered the VideoEthernetInteger application during a routine inspection of new file submissions to the VirusTotal site. Our analysis revealed that this app is adware belonging to the AdLoad malware family. VideoEthernetInteger delivers intrusive ad campaigns and may have additional harmful functionalities.

VideoEthernetInteger adware

VideoEthernetInteger adware overview

Adware is designed to feed users with deceptive and malicious advertisements. This third-party graphical content is displayed on visited websites and/or other interfaces.

The adverts endorse online scams, untrustworthy/dangerous software, and even malware. Some of the ads can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations upon being clicked.

It is pertinent to mention that any legitimate products/services encountered via these advertisements are unlikely to be promoted by any official parties. Instead, it is most probable that this promotion is undertaken by scammers who abuse the content's affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.

Advertising-supported software might not display adverts if certain conditions are unsuitable, such as an incompatible browser/system or user geolocation, specific websites are not visited, and so on. However, even if VideoEthernetInteger does not display ads – it remains a danger to device integrity and user safety.

AdLoad applications often have browser hijacker traits, although we did not observe these qualities while testing VideoEthernetInteger.

Additionally, this adware-type app might have data-tracking functionalities. Information of interest may include: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, and so forth. The gathered information can then be monetized via sale to third-parties.

To summarize, advertising-supported software like VideoEthernetInteger may cause system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples

We have examined countless adware-type applications; SyncedAdminThemeRanked, and TelephoneResults are just a couple of examples.

Software categorized as such typically appears legitimate and offers "handy" functions. However, these features seldom work as promised, and in most cases – they do not work at all. It must be mentioned that operational functionalities are not a definitive indicator of a software's legitimacy or safety.

How did VideoEthernetInteger install on my computer?

Adware can be bundled with (packed alongside) regular programs. The threat of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the device is increased by downloading from untrustworthy sources (e.g., freeware and free file-hosting websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by treating installation processes with negligence (e.g., using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.).

Additionally, adware can have "official" download pages, and it is promoted on scam websites. Users primarily enter these webpages via redirects generated by misspelled URLs, sites that employ rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware (with browser force-opening abilities).

Intrusive advertisements proliferate advertising-supported software as well. Some of the adverts can be triggered (i.e., by being clicked) to execute scripts that perform stealthy downloads/installations.

How to avoid installation of adware?

It is important to research software before downloading or purchasing it. We recommend downloading only from official and verified channels. Another recommendation is to treat installations with caution, e.g., by reading terms, inspecting available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all additional apps, extensions, etc.

We also advise being vigilant while browsing since fraudulent and dangerous online content usually appears legitimate and innocuous. For example, while intrusive ads may look ordinary/harmless – they redirect to highly questionable websites (e.g., gambling, scam-promoting, pornography, adult dating, etc.).

In case of continuous encounters with advertisements and/or redirects of this kind, check the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with VideoEthernetInteger, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
