How to remove FlightRemote adware from the operating system
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What kind of application is FlightRemote?
Our research team discovered FlightRemote while inspecting new submissions to the VirusTotal website. After analyzing this app, we determined that it is adware belonging to the AdLoad malware family.
This piece of advertising-supported software is designed to run intrusive advertisement campaigns, i.e., feed users with unwanted and deceptive ads.
FlightRemote adware overview
Adware displays adverts on various interfaces, such as desktops, visited websites, or others. These advertisements (e.g., pop-ups, overlays, banners, surveys, etc.) primarily endorse online scams, unreliable/harmful software, and even malware. Some intrusive ads can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations upon being clicked.
It is noteworthy that while legitimate content may be encountered through these adverts, it is unlikely to be promoted in this manner by any official parties. It is most probable that this endorsement is undertaken by scammers who abuse the products' affiliate programs in order to obtain illegitimate commissions.
Advertising-supported software may need certain conditions to deliver intrusive ad campaigns (e.g., compatible browser/system or user geolocation, visit to specific websites, etc.). However, even if FlightRemote does not display advertisements – it remains a threat to device and user safety.
It is pertinent to mention that AdLoad applications often have browser-hijacking traits, although FlightRemote did not exhibit any such qualities during testing.
Furthermore, this rogue app likely has data-tracking functionalities. Targeted information may include: browsing and search engine histories, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, and so on. The collected data can then be sold to third-parties or otherwise abused for profit.
In summary, the presence of software like FlightRemote on devices may result in system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have analyzed thousands of adware-type applications; UrbanUnited, SystemSmarter, RiddleStack, and MergeFlow are merely some examples.
Advertising-supported software usually appears legitimate and innocuous. It entices users into downloading/installing it by offering a wide variety of useful functionalities. However, these functions seldom work as promised, and in most cases – they do not work at all.
It must be stressed that even if a piece of software operates as indicated by its promotional material – that is not definitive proof of either legitimacy or safety.
How did FlightRemote install on my computer?
Adware can be bundled (packed together) with ordinary programs. The risk of allowing bundled content into the system is increased by downloading from untrustworthy sources (e.g., freeware and third-party websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by rushing through installation processes (e.g., ignoring terms, using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.).
Adware can also have "official" download webpages, and it is promoted on scam sites. Users typically access these pages via redirects caused by websites utilizing rogue advertising networks, mistyped URLs, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
Intrusive adverts spread advertising-supported software as well. Once clicked on, some of these advertisements can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user consent.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading it only from official/verified channels. Installation processes must be treated with caution, e.g., by reading terms, exploring available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplementary apps, extensions, tools, etc.
Another recommendation is to be vigilant while browsing since fake and malicious online content usually appears legitimate and harmless. For example, despite their innocuous appearance – intrusive ads redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.).
In case of continuous encounters with such adverts/redirects, check the device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with FlightRemote, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
