Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What kind of application is SearchMok?
SearchMok is a browser hijacker designed to promote a fake search engine. It hijacks a web browser by changing some of its settings to searchmok.com. Typically, browser-hijacking apps are promoted using questionable pages and other methods. We have discovered SearchMok while inspecting deceptive websites.
More about SearchMok application
SearchMok promotes searchmok.com by making it as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab page. Moreover, it does not allow users to replace searchmok.com with any other address. Searchmok.com is a fake search engine because it shows results generated by Google (it redirects to google.com).
It is important to mention that not all fake search engines show results generated by legitimate search engines. They can generate misleading results and redirect users to untrustworthy websites (they can show results generated by untrustworthy search engines).

Browser hijackers in general
Browser hijackers can be designed to collect browsing data and even sensitive information, which can lead to problems such as identity theft, invaded privacy, issues related to online privacy, etc. Most apps of this type are promoted as legitimate/useful apps. More examples of browser hijackers are FortSearch, StreamTopSearch, and BestSportSearches.
How did SearchMok install on my computer?
Most browser hijackers are distributed via deceptive websites, advertisements, downloaders/installers for other software. Clicking on ads can download or install unwanted apps when those ads are designed to execute certain scripts.
Downloaders and installers used to distribute browser hijackers usually have "Custom", "Advanced", or similar settings. Browsers become hijacked when users install software without changing those settings (without deselecting optional installations).
How to avoid installation of unwanted applications?
Download applications (and files) from trustworthy sources such as official websites and legitimate platforms. Always use direct download links. Do not trust apps downloaded via unofficial pages, third-party downloaders, P2P networks, and similar sources.
Also, do not forget to check downloaders and installers for optional downloads and installations. Deselect unwanted apps before downloading or installing software. Do not click on advertisements appearing on torrent sites, illegal movie streaming pages, etc. If your computer is already infected with SearchMok, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
