How to remove the GreatSearchSport browser hijacker?

What is GreatSearchSport?
GreatSearchSport is a rogue browser extension classified as a browser hijacker. It is designed to modify browser settings in order to promote the greatsearchsport.com fake search engine. Additionally, this piece of software likely has data tracking abilities. Due to the questionable methods used to distribute browser hijackers, they are also categorized as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).
GreatSearchSport browser hijacker in detail
Browser hijackers reassign browsers' homepage, default search engine, and new tab/window URLs - to fake web searcher addresses. GreatSearchSport operates in this manner as well. Hence, with it installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to greatsearchsport.com.
Illegitimate search engines usually cannot generate search results, so they redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to Google, Yahoo, Bing, or other genuine ones. Greatsearchsport.com is not an exception to this. It has been observed with redirecting both to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) and the nearbyme.io fake search engine (possibly others). While nearbyme.io can provide search results - they are inaccurate and may endorse unreliable/malicious content.
Furthermore, browser hijackers can undo any changes users try to make to their browsers. Alternatively, they can restrict or deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, restoring a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it.
What is more, browser hijackers typically have data tracking abilities. They can record browsing activity (URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather sensitive information inferred from it (IP addresses, personally identifiable details, etc.). The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user privacy, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated without delay.

Browser hijackers in general
GetMovieSearch, Gaming News Feed, and ProMusicSearch are a couple examples of browser hijackers. They appear legitimate and advertise "handy" features. However, the functionalities seldom work as promised, and in most cases - they are utterly nonoperational.
Most PUAs lure users into download/installation with nonexistent functions. The only goal of unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers; it has no real value to users. PUAs are designed to hijack browsers, force-open untrustworthy and malicious sites, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private data.
How did GreatSearchSport install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed through download/installation setups of other programs. This false marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is termed "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g., skipped steps and sections, etc.) increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the device.
Intrusive advertisements are used to proliferate PUAs as well. Once clicked on, the adverts can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user permission. Some PUAs can also have "official" promotional sites from which they can be downloaded and/or purchased.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is advised to research software before download/installation and/or purchase. Only official and verified download channels must be used. Untrustworthy sources, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - commonly offer bundled and dangerous content.
When downloading/installing, it is recommended to read terms, explore available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from additional apps, functions, tools, and so forth. Intrusive ads appear harmless; however, they redirect to various questionable sites (e.g., adult-dating, gambling, pornography, etc.).
In case of encounters with adverts and/or redirects of this type, the device must be checked and all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with GreatSearchSport, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
