How to uninstall SkilledRecord adware from the operating system?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is SkilledRecord?
SkilledRecord is a rogue application classified as adware. It has browser hijacker qualities as well. This app operates by delivering intrusive advertisement campaigns and promoting fake search engines through modifications to browser settings. Additionally, SkilledRecord likely has data tracking abilities.
Since most users inadvertently download/install adware and browser hijackers, they are also categorized as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications). SkilledRecord has been observed being distributed via fake Adobe Flash Player updates. It is noteworthy that fraudulent updaters/installers proliferate not only PUAs but also malware.
SkilledRecord adware in detail
Adware enables the placement of pop-ups, banners, surveys, coupons, and other intrusive ads - on any visited website and/or different interfaces. The delivered advertisements severely diminish the browsing experience by overlaying webpage content and slowing down the browsing speed.
Furthermore, intrusive adverts pose a threat to device and user safety. They endorse a variety of sale-based, rogue, untrustworthy, deceptive/scam, and malicious sites. Some of these advertisements can infiltrate software (e.g., PUAs) into systems - once they are clicked on.
Browser hijackers assign fake web searcher addresses as browsers' homepage, new tab/window, and homepage URLs. Hence, with such a piece of software installed: every new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar - redirect to the promoted address.Fraudulent search engines usually cannot provide search results, so they redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other genuine ones.
Browser hijackers can reset any changes users try to make to their browsers. Alternatively, they can restrict or deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, restoring a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it.
Most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers) can track data. Information of interest includes: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, IP addresses/ geolocations, personally identifiable details, and so on. PUA developers monetize the collected data by sharing it with and/or selling it to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of unwanted apps on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. To protect device integrity and user privacy, all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

Adware in general
ExpandedActivity, MainCharacterSearch, AphroditeLookup, and NetLookupSearch are a few examples of adware. They appear legitimate and offer a broad range of "handy" features. However, despite how good the advertised functions may sound - they are rarely operational.
Practically all PUAs entice users into download/installation with nonexistent functionalities. The sole purpose of unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. PUAs are designed to run intrusive advertisement campaigns, hijack browsers, force-open unreliable/malicious websites, and collect private and sensitive data.
How did SkilledRecord install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed via download/installation setups of other programs. This false marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". Rushed downloads/installations (e.g., ignored terms, skipped steps, etc.) increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the device.
Intrusive advertisements are used to spread PUAs. Upon being clicked, the adverts can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user permission. Some PUAs may also have "official" promotional sites from which they can be downloaded and/or purchased.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is advised to research software before download/installation and/or purchase. Only official and verified download channels must be used. Untrustworthy sources, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer bundled and harmful content.
When downloading/installing, it is recommended to read terms, study possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from additional apps, tools, functions, and so on. Intrusive advertisements appear legitimate; however, they redirect to questionable sites (e.g., gambling, adult-dating, pornography, etc.).
In case of encounters with such ads and/or redirects, the system must be inspected and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with SkilledRecord, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
