How to remove the ProPDFConverterSearch browser hijacker?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What is ProPDFConverterSearch?
ProPDFConverterSearch is a browser hijacker promoting the propdfconvertersearch.com fake search engine. It operates by making modifications to browsers in order to cause redirects to its search engine. Additionally, most browser hijackers collect browsing-related data. Due to the questionable methods used to distribute browser hijackers, they are also classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).
ProPDFConverterSearch browser hijacker in detail
Browser hijackers assign fake web searcher addresses as browsers' homepage, default search engine, and new tab/window URLs. ProPDFConverterSearch modifies browsers in this fashion as well. Hence, with it installed: new tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to propdfconvertersearch.com.
Fraudulent search engines usually cannot generate search results, so they redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to legitimate ones. Propdfconvertersearch.com is not an exception to this; it has redirected both to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) and to the fake searchlee.com search engine (other variants are possible).
Searchlee.com is an illegitimate web searcher, although it can provide search results. However, the results provided by this search engine are inaccurate and may endorse untrustworthy and malicious content.
Furthermore, browser hijackers can reset any changes users try to make to their browsers. Alternatively, they can restrict or deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, restoring a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it.
ProPDFConverterSearch likely has data tracking abilities, as that is typical for browser hijackers. They record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect sensitive information extracted from it (IP addresses, personally identifiable details, etc.). This data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user privacy, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

Browser hijackers in general
ISportSearch, GameSearchNow, and Newtab Plus are a few examples of browser hijackers. They appear ordinary and harmless. Browser hijackers also offer "handy" functionalities. The functions seldom work as advertised, and in most cases - they are utterly nonoperational.
In fact, nearly all PUAs lure users into download/installation with nonexistent features. Unwanted apps only aim to generate profit at user expense. Therefore, instead of delivering on any promises, PUAs can hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private data.
How did ProPDFConverterSearch install on my computer?
PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other programs. This deceptive marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is termed "bundling". Rushed downloads/installations (e.g., ignored terms, used pre-set options, etc.) increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive advertisements are used to distribute PUAs. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user permission. Some PUAs can have "official" promotional sites from which they can be downloaded and/or purchased.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to research software prior to download/installation. Additionally, all downloads must be performed from official and verified sources. Untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer bundled content.
When downloading/installing, it is advised to read terms, explore possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from additional apps, tools, functions, and so on. Intrusive adverts appear legitimate; however, they redirect to highly dubious sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
In case of encounters with such ads and/or redirects, the system must be checked and all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with ProPDFConverterSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
