How to remove the ProStreamSearch browser hijacker?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What is ProStreamSearch?
ProStreamSearch is a browser hijacker. It modifies browser settings to promote (by causing redirects to) the prostreamsearch.com fake search engine. Additionally, ProStreamSearch likely spies on users' browsing habits, as that is typical of such software. Due to the dubious techniques used to distribute browser hijackers, they are also classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).
ProStreamSearch browser hijacker in detail
Browser hijackers assign fake web searcher addresses as browsers' homepage, new tab/window, and default search engine URLs. This is how ProStreamSearch operates as well. Hence, with it installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and web searches done via the URL bar - redirect to prostreamsearch.com.
Fraudulent search engines seldom can provide search results, so they redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other genuine ones. Prostreamsearch.com has been observed redirecting to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) and to searchlee.com. The latter is a fake web searcher; though searchlee.com can generate search results - they are inaccurate and may endorse unreliable/malicious content.
Furthermore, browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to the browser settings and/or undo any permitted changes made. Due to these persistence-ensuring tactics, restoring an affected browser is impossible without removing the software hijacking it.
Most browser hijackers have data tracking abilities. Targeted information includes (but is not limited to): URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, IP addresses/ geolocations, and personally identifiable details. Browser hijacker developers monetize the collected data by sharing it with and/or selling it to third-parties.
To summarize, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. Therefore, it is crucial to eliminate all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

Browser hijackers in general
Movie Finder, GameSearchOnline, Template Search, and Newtab Plus are some examples of browser hijackers. They appear legitimate and offer "handy" and "advantageous" functionalities. However, the advertised features are rarely operational.
In fact, the sole purpose of all PUAs is to generate profit for the developers; hence, functionality and user safety are irrelevant. Instead of delivering on any promises, unwanted apps can hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private and sensitive data.
How did ProStreamSearch install on my computer?
PUAs can be spread via download/installation setups. This deceptive marketing method of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is named "bundling". Rushed downloads/installations (e.g., ignored terms, used "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the device.
Intrusive advertisements are also used to proliferate PUAs. Upon being clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user consent. Some PUAs have "official" promotional websites from which they can be downloaded and/or purchased.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to research software products prior to download/installation. Only official and verified download channels must be used. Dubious sources, e.g., unofficial and freeware sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer harmful content.
When downloading/installing, it is advised to read terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings to opt-out from additional apps, tools, functions, etc. Intrusive adverts appear legitimate; however, they redirect to various questionable pages (e.g., gambling, adult-dating, pornography, and so on).
In case of encounters with such ads and/or redirect, the device must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with ProStreamSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
