How to uninstall TypicalProcess adware

Also Known As: Ads by TypicalProcess
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What kind of application is TypicalProcess?

TypicalProcess is a rogue application categorized as adware. It also has browser hijacker traits. After successful infiltration, this app runs intrusive advertisement campaigns (i.e., delivers various ads) and makes modifications to browser settings in order to promote fake search engines.

Additionally, most software within these categories has data tracking capabilities, which are used to monitor users' browsing activity and collect sensitive/private information. Due to the dubious methods used to proliferate TypicalProcess, it is classified as an unwanted application.

This app has been observed being distributed via fake Adobe Flash Player updates. Note that bogus software updaters/installers often proliferate unwanted apps and even malware (e.g., trojans, ransomware, etc.).

More about TypicalProcess

Adware enables third-party graphical content placement, typically on any visited website (or other interfaces). This software delivers pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, and different intrusive ads. These ads seriously diminish the browsing experience, as they overlay web page content and reduce browsing speed.

Furthermore, intrusive advertisements pose a threat to device/user safety. They promote untrusted, rogue, deceptive/scam, compromised, and malicious sites. Once clicked, intrusive ads can even be triggered (when clicked) to execute scripts designed to download/install software (e.g., rogue apps) stealthily.

Browser hijackers reassign the default search engine, new tab/window, and homepage URLs to fake searcher addresses. Therefore, with a browser hijacker installed, new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar redirect to the promoted address.

Fake search engines are seldom able to provide search results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other legitimate sites.

Browser hijackers can also rest any changes users try to make to their browsers and restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, restoring a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it.

Furthermore, most unwanted apps (adware and browser hijackers included) can track data. Information of interest includes (but is not limited to) URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, geolocations, and personally identifiable details. The collected data is monetized by sharing with and/or selling to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

In summary, unwanted software can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial loss, and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user privacy, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated immediately upon detection.

Examples of similar apps

DiscoveryUnitConvusterAccessibilityDock, and DominantCommand are some examples of other apps within the adware category. They may seem legitimate and offer various "useful" features, however, the promised functionality is usually nonoperational. In fact, this applies to most apps of this kind.

The only purpose of this unwanted software is to generate profit at users' expense. Rather than delivering any real value, unwanted apps run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects, and collect vulnerable data.

How did TypicalProcess install on my computer?

Apps of this kind are distributed via download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and settings, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.

Some apps have "official" download sites. Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install unwanted apps without users' consent.

How to avoid installation of unwanted applications

You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on.

Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others). If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.

Installed programs must be activated and updated with tools or implemented functions that are provided by the official developers. No other third party, unofficial tools should be used.

Note that it is illegal to activate licensed software with ‘cracking’ tools. Files and programs should be downloaded from official websites and via direct download links. Avoid third party installers and the tools/sources mentioned above.

Do not open website links or files in irrelevant emails that are received from unknown, suspicious addresses. These bogus emails are often disguised as official and important. Regularly, scan your computer with reputable, up-to-date antivirus or anti-spyware software.

If your computer is already infected with TypicalProcess, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
