How to remove the Show Tabs browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Show Tabs?
Show Tabs is a typical browser hijacker: it modifies certain browser settings to promote a fake search engine (it changes the settings to fxsmash.xyz).
This app can also read browsing histories and possibly other, more personal details. In any case, browser hijackers should never be installed. Note that users do not often download or install software of this type intentionally and, for this reason, Show Tabs and similar apps are classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
Generally, browser hijackers promote fake search engines by changing settings such as the homepage, new tab, and default search engine. In some cases, Show Tabs changes the addresses to fxsmash.xyz, however, it also promotes/opens this site when users enter search queries into the URL bar.
The search engine promoted by Show Tabs is fake because it simply shows results generated by Yahoo (fxsmash.xyz redirects users to search.yahoo.com), however, not all fake search engines show results from legitimate search engines. Some provide misleading results, include unwanted ads or display results from other dubious search engines.
You are strongly advised to use Google, Yahoo, Bing or other legitimate search engines. Avoid fake search engines such as fxsmash.xyz and browser hijackers such as Show Tabs.
Show Tabs and other browser hijackers revert the settings after attempts are made to change them. Therefore, fxsmash.xyz can be removed from settings only when the Show Tabs app is no longer installed on the browser and operating system.
Show Tabs can read browsing history, however, browser hijackers often collect other browsing-related data such as IP addresses, geolocations, and so on. Some browser hijackers can access personal details as well. Collected data could be used to generate revenue. For example, it could be used for marketing purposes and sold to third parties (potentially cyber criminals).
Therefore, browser hijackers can cause problems with online privacy, browsing safety or other issues (e.g., identity theft).

More examples of apps that are classified as browser hijackers are SearchConverterIt, TheStreamSearch, and Movieapp Search. Most of these apps are advertised as legitimate, useful applications that supposedly include various features, provide accurate search results, and so on. In fact, browser hijackers are useless and can cause serious problems.
Remove browser hijackers immediately and do not use fake search engines to browse the internet.
How did Show Tabs install on my computer?
Browser hijackers, adware-type apps, and other types of PUAs are commonly distributed by integrating them into the download and/or installation set-ups of other programs, so that a proportion of users inadvertently download and install them together with their chosen software. This distribution method is known as "bundling".
Offers to download and install additionally-included apps usually appear in "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings of the set-ups (where they can usually be declined). Many users fail to check and change these settings, thereby granting permission for PUAs to be downloaded and installed by default.
In addition, unwanted downloads and installations are sometimes caused by clicking deceptive advertisements capable of executing certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources, since dubious channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive or bundled content.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, explore all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive ads may seem normal and harmless, however, they can redirect to various dubious web pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).
If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove any suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.
If your computer is already infected with Show Tabs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
