How to uninstall VPNrecommended adware from your operating system
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is VPNrecommended?
VPNrecommended is suspicious software, endorsed as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) tool. Since most users download/install this app inadvertently, it is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
While VPNrecommended may seem to be a legitimate tool, it is bundled with adware and/or browser hijackers. Therefore, with VPNrecommended infiltrated into systems, users might encounter misleading/malicious advertisements and redirects to similarly dangerous sites.
Additionally, adware-type apps and browser hijackers are a serious privacy concern, as they typically have data tracking capabilities.
Adware enables the placement of banners, pop-ups, coupons, surveys, full-page, and other intrusive ads on any visited website and/or different interfaces. The delivered advertisements significantly diminish the browsing experience by limiting web page visibility and browsing speed.
Intrusive ads also pose a threat to device/user safety. Once clicked, they can redirect to untrusted/malicious sites, and some can stealthily download/install software (e.g., PUAs). Browser hijackers reassign the default search engine, homepage, and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of fake search engines. Therefore, each new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar redirects to the fake search engine address.
The promoted search engines are rarely able to provide search results, and so they tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other legitimate sites. Even when bogus search engines can generate unique results, they tend to be inaccurate and promote dubious and harmful websites.
Recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it, as browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to browser settings and undo any permitted changes made.
Most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) can track data. They can monitor browsing activity (visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, etc.) and gather sensitive information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations, and even personally identifiable details). The collected data is then monetized by sharing with and/or selling to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, this unwanted software can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial loss, and identity theft. To protect device integrity and user privacy, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

ConfigType, DeskProduct, RotatorBox, and StandartProduct are some examples of other adware-type apps. They may seem legitimate and offer various "useful" functionality, however, the advertised functions are seldom operational. In fact, this applies to most PUAs.
The only purpose of this unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs run intrusive advertisement campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects, and collect private data.
How did VPNrecommended install on my computer?
VPNrecommended has been observed being distributed through a scam website hosted on Amazon AWS. Deceptive sites and "official" promotional/download pages are often used to spread PUAs, however, they are more commonly downloaded/installed together with other products.
The false marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling". Rushing download/installation processes (e.g., ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using pre-set options, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well. When clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install these rogue applications without user permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on.
Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others). If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.
Installed programs must be activated and updated with tools or implemented functions that are provided by the official developers. No other third party, unofficial tools should be used.
Note that it is illegal to activate licensed software with ‘cracking’ tools. Files and programs should be downloaded from official websites and via direct download links. Avoid third party installers and the tools/sources mentioned above.
Do not open website links or files in irrelevant emails that are received from unknown, suspicious addresses. These bogus emails are often disguised as official and important. Regularly, scan your computer with reputable, up-to-date antivirus or anti-spyware software.
If your computer is already infected with VPNrecommended, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
