Avoid being scammed by the "TikTok Followers Hack"

Also Known As: TikTok Followers Hack scam website
Damage level: Medium

What is the "TikTok Followers Hack"?

"TikTok Followers Hack" refers to a scam run on various deceptive sites. This scheme offers the bogus service of generating followers, fans and 'likes' for users' content on TikTok, a video-sharing social networking platform owned by the ByteDance Ltd. company.

Note that the "TikTok Followers Hack" cannot operate as advertised and is in no way associated with ByteDance Ltd. It simply redirects users to other untrusted, deceptive, phishing and malicious websites.

Therefore, you are strongly advised against using the fake services offered by "TikTok Followers Hack", as it poses a threat to device and user safety. Typically, access to web pages that promote scams is gained via mistyped URLs, redirects caused by intrusive ads or by Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already installed on systems.

TikTok Followers Hack scam

The "TikTok Followers Hack" scheme claims that users simply need to provide their TikTok account usernames, indicate their device (Android OS, iOS, "PC") and select how many followers, fans and likes they want to create.

Once this is done, users are presented with a supposed "verification" pop-up window, wherein presented buttons redirect users to other bogus and possibly malicious sites.

At the time of research, the "TikTok Followers Hack" scam promoted phishing pages, specifically targeting users' mobile phone numbers and/or ones designed to sign them up for unspecified/misleading mobile services for a monthly fee.

In fact, such schemes can promote a wide variety of rogue/dangerous websites, which can lead to a likewise broad range of serious problems. For example, these scams can redirect to sale-based/promotional pages (of both legitimate and bogus products) and dubious, compromised, deceptive/scam and malicious sites.

The promoted web pages can offer a wide variety of untrusted software such as fake anti-virus tools, adware, browser hijackers and other PUAs. Some may even proliferate Trojans, ransomware, cryptominers and other malware.

To summarize, by trusting the "TikTok Followers Hack" scam, users could lose their TikTok accounts, experience severe privacy issues, system infections, financial losses and even identity theft.

As mentioned, potentially unwanted applications are often the cause of redirects to dubious web pages (e.g. those promoting the "TikTok Followers Hack" and similar content), however, PUAs can have a wide variety of dangerous functions in different combinations.

Furthermore, this software is commonly promoted online, often disguised as or packed together with ordinary products. PUAs may require activation (i.e. purchase) to perform the promised features, yet following activation, they remain nonoperational - fake anti-viruses are an example of this.

Adware-types operate by running intrusive advertisement campaigns. The delivered ads are more than just a nuisance, since, when clicked, they redirect to bogus/malicious websites and some can even stealthily download/install software (e.g. PUAs).

Another type called browser hijackers make alterations to browser settings and limit/deny access to them in order to promote bogus search engines. These web searchers are rarely able to provide search results, and so they redirect to Google, Bing, Yahoo and other genuine search engines.

Most PUAs (regardless of type) have data tracking capabilities. They monitor browsing activity (browsing and search engine histories) and collect sensitive information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data usually contains personally identifiable information. PUA developers monetize this information by sharing it with and/or selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

In summary, the presence of unwanted software on devices pose a threat to device integrity and user privacy. Therefore, you are strongly advised to remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

The internet is rife with a variety of deceptive material. "TikTok Verified Badge Generator", "Memorama hack", "Among Us Free Items" and "Fortnite Hack Generator" are just some examples of other schemes akin to the "TikTok Followers Hack".

Popular scam models include: "amazing" deals, offers and services; fake prize giveaways and raffles; alerts that an essential piece of software is outdated or missing, and; warnings that the system is infected or at risk. Due to the relative prevalence of online scams, you are strongly advised to exercise caution when browsing.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Users sometimes inadvertently download and install unwanted apps via deceptive advertisements - they click ads that cause unwanted download/installations by executing certain scripts.

Unwanted downloads and installations also occur during download/installation of other programs. I.e., when PUAs are included into the set-ups as 'extra offers'. This PUA distribution method of PUAs is called "bundling".

Typically, offers to download and install these additional apps can be declined via "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings, or by unticking certain checkboxes within the set-ups. When users download and install programs without making these checks and changes, they often allow PUAs to infiltrate.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on.

Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others). If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.

Installed programs must be activated and updated with tools or implemented functions that are provided by the official developers. No other third party, unofficial tools should be used.

Note that it is illegal to activate licensed software with ‘cracking’ tools. Files and programs should be downloaded from official websites and via direct download links. Avoid third party installers and the tools/sources mentioned above.

Do not open website links or files in irrelevant emails that are received from unknown, suspicious addresses. These bogus emails are often disguised as official and important. Regularly, scan your computer with reputable, up-to-date antivirus or anti-spyware software.

If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
