How to remove unwanted apps promoted by bestpeacheu.com and similar web pages

Also Known As: bestpeacheu.com pop-up
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is bestpeacheu[.]com?

Typically, websites such as bestpeacheu[.]com are promoted by other bogus websites, dubious ads, or potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). I.e., users do not often visit them intentionally.

The main purpose of bestpeacheu[.]com and similar sites is to trick visitors into downloading PUAs.

bestpeacheu[.]com scam

bestpeacheu[.]com and similar web pages are often designed to display fake notifications claiming that the device has been infected with viruses and offering removal of them with PUAs. In summary, these pages promote various apps in deceptive ways.

There are at least three variants of bestpeacheu[.]com, all offering download of an app called Hаrbоr VРN - Sесurе Cоnnеctiоn. This app may be legitimate, however, it is not safe to download apps from or via dubious websites.

As mentioned, it is likely that bestpeacheu[.]com is promoted via PUAs. These apps should never be trusted or used. Commonly, they generate ads (e.g. banners, coupons, pop-ups, surveys) and collect data (IP addresses, addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, geolocations, and even private, sensitive information).

The ads can promote untrusted pages or even cause unwanted downloads and installations.

Gathered information could be misused to generate revenue. For example, sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

There are many pages like bestpeacheu[.]com on the web. Some examples are securitycheck[.]network, systemtechnotify[.]com and department[.]limited. Note that they may seem similar to official Apple pages, however, none are official or legitimate in any way.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

PUAs are distributed via download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and settings, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.

Some PUAs have "official" download sites. Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised not to use Peer-to-Peer networks (such as eMule, torrent clients, etc.), unofficial websites, third party downloaders, installers, etc. to download or install software or files. Use official pages and direct links.

Check download/installation set-ups for settings such as "Advanced", "Manual, or "Custom" (or include certain checkboxes) and decline offers to download or install unwanted apps before completing the process.

Additionally, do not trust or click advertisements that are displayed on dubious web pages - they can open other rogue sites or cause unwanted downloads and installations.

Remove any suspicious or unknown extensions, add-ons and plug-ins installed on the browser. The same applies to software of this kind that is installed on the operating system.

If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
