How to remove applications that promote spaceshellvpn.com and similar pages
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is spaceshellvpn[.]com?
Websites such as spaceshellvpn[.]com cannot be trusted because they often trick visitors into installing potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). Furthermore, these web pages are promoted via other bogus pages, deceptive advertisements, and PUAs. I.e., users do not often visit them intentionally.
Like many similar sites, spaceshellvpn[.]com is disguised as an official Apple web page, however, the Apple company (and its official pages) has nothing to do with this or other deceptive sites.
This website claims that the device (iPhone) has been compromised. More precisely, it states that the device is infected with a Trojan, and unless it is removed, the user's personal accounts, photos and payment data will become available to third parties.
Like most similar websites, it invites the visitor to download a specific application via a provided website link within a certain time frame. Apps should never be downloaded via websites such as spaceshellvpn[.]com. If these pages are opened by browsers often, it is likely that PUAs are installed on them.
Note that PUAs also generate advertisements and collect data.
In such cases, PUAs generate coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups and other ads. They collect data such as IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations, and other browsing data. The ads can be designed to promote untrusted pages or even cause download/installation of unwanted apps by running certain scripts. PUAs not only gather browsing-related data but also sensitive, personal details.

More examples of websites that are similar to spaceshellvpn[.]com are peachlandeu[.]com, moderation-support[.]network and appleconnect.safellk[.]com. Most attempt to trick users into believing that their devices are infected and into downloading and installing PUAs.
These web pages should never be trusted, even when they promote legitimate apps.
How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?
Users sometimes inadvertently download and install unwanted apps via deceptive advertisements - they click ads that cause unwanted download/installations by executing certain scripts.
Unwanted downloads and installations also occur during download/installation of other programs. I.e., when PUAs are included into the set-ups as 'extra offers'. This PUA distribution method of PUAs is called "bundling".
Typically, offers to download and install these additional apps can be declined via "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings, or by unticking certain checkboxes within the set-ups. When users download and install programs without making these checks and changes, they often allow PUAs to infiltrate.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Download software and files from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to use torrent clients, eMule (or other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites or other sources of this kind.
Avoid third party installers. Check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings, and decline offers to download or install unwanted software. Do not click ads that are displayed on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) that are installed on the browser. The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system.
Regularly scan your computer with reputable antivirus or anti-spyware software and keep this software up to date.
If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
