How to remove apps that change browser settings to search.locatorunit.com
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is search.locatorunit.com?
search.locatorunit.com is the address of a fake search engine. These types of addresses appear in browser settings after installation of browser hijackers (or apps that function in this manner). In most cases, users download and install browser hijackers inadvertently and, for this reason, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
Note that browser hijackers promote fake search engines and also collect data.
Generally, browser hijackers promote fake search engines by changing browser settings such as the address of the homepage, new tab and enter search engine. I.e., they ensure that users are forced to visit a specific address (in this case, search.locatorunit.com) when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar.
Note that search.locatorunit.com is promoted through adware-type apps such as LeadingOperation, TypeConsole, PracticalSystem, etc. This search engine is fake because it redirects users to search.yahoo.com - rather than generating unique results, it simply provides those generated by the Yahoo search engine.
Apps that promote search.locatorunit.com also serve advertisements. For example, banners, coupons, surveys, and pop-ups. These apps also collect details such as IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, and other browsing data.
In some cases, they can access private, sensitive information. If you have a PUA that promotes search.locatorunit.com installed on the browser, you might be served with various advertisements and are at potential risk of having problems relating to online privacy, browsing safety and even becoming a victim of identity theft.

search.productivebrowser.com, searchgoose.com and search.getstranto.club are some of examples of other search engines that do not generate unique results (they are fake search engines). Users are often forced to use them. Typically, addresses of a fake search engines can be removed from browser settings only when the app that promotes them is no longer installed.
Therefore, if an app that functions as a browser hijacker is installed on the browser and/or computer, remove it immediately.
How did search.locatorunit.com install on my computer?
Research shows that a PUA designed to promote search.productivebrowser.com is distributed through a fake installer, which is disguised as an Adobe Flash Player installer. The download and installation set-ups of various programs are often used to distribute unwanted apps - they are included as 'additional offers'.
This distribution method is known as bundling. Offers to download and install additionally-included apps usually appear in "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings of the set-ups (where they can usually be declined). Many users fail to check and change these settings, thereby granting permission for PUAs to be downloaded and installed by default.
In addition, unwanted downloads and installations are sometimes caused by clicking deceptive advertisements capable of executing certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).
If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
