How to remove the ConvertItSearch application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is ConvertItSearch?
Typically, browser hijackers promote the addresses of fake search engines by changing certain browser settings. ConvertItSearch promotes convertitsearch.com in this way. Furthermore, these apps collect browsing-related and other information.
Most users download and install browser hijackers inadvertently and, for this reason, ConvertItSearch and other apps of this type are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
ConvertItSearch promotes convertitsearch.com by assigning it as the address of the homepage, default search engine and new tab. I.e., it ensures that users are forced to visit the address when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar.
Note that convertitsearch.com redirects users to search.yahoo.com and simply provides results generated by Yahoo. I.e., convertitsearch.com does not generate unique results and is therefore a fake search engine. Typically, addresses of fake search engines can be removed from browsers settings only after uninstallation of the browser hijackers that promote them.
Therefore, convertitsearch.com can be stopped from being opened only when ConvertItSearch is no longer installed. PUAs also collect data. In most cases, they target browsing data (e.g., geolocations, IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited websites), however, some browser hijackers collect sensitive, personal information as well.
Furthermore, the developers often misuse the information to generate revenue. For example, they might sell it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). This can cause problems relating to online privacy, browsing safety, and some people might even become victims of identity theft.

More examples of apps classified as browser hijackers are Kibo Web, HDSportSearchs and AnyMovieSearch. Usually these apps promote a fake search engine address and collect data. Note that most browser hijackers are advertised as useful, legitimate apps, which supposedly include various features, improve the browsing experience, and are useful in other ways.
In fact, they are useless and can cause serious problems. Therefore, ConvertItSearch and other apps of this type should never be downloaded or installed.
How did ConvertItSearch install on my computer?
Browser hijackers, adware-type apps, and other types of PUAs are commonly distributed by integrating them into the download and/or installation set-ups of other programs, so that a proportion of users inadvertently download and install them together with their chosen software.
This distribution method is known as "bundling". Offers to download and install additionally-included apps usually appear in "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings of the set-ups (where they can usually be declined). Many users fail to check and change these settings, thereby granting permission for PUAs to be downloaded and installed by default.
In addition, unwanted downloads and installations are sometimes caused by clicking deceptive advertisements capable of executing certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Download software and files from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to use torrent clients, eMule (or other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites or other sources of this kind. Avoid third party installers. Check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings, and decline offers to download or install unwanted software.
Do not click ads that are displayed on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations. Remove any unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) that are installed on the browser.
The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with ConvertItSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
