How to remove the IStreamSearch browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is IStreamSearch?
IStreamSearch is rogue software designed to make modifications to browser settings to promote istreamsearch.com (a fake search engine). Due to this, IStreamSearch is classified as a browser hijacker. Furthermore, this browser hijacker also has data tracking capabilities, which are used to monitor users' browsing activity.
Due to the dubious methods used to proliferate IStreamSearch, it is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Popular browsers with large user bases are common targets of browser hijackers. They reassign the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of fake search engines. IStreamSearch also makes these alterations to browsers to promote istreamsearch.com.
To elaborate on how these modifications affect browsing, with IStreamSearch installed, each new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar redirects to istreamsearch.com.
Rogue search engines are seldom capable of providing search results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing and other genuine sites. The web searcher promoted by IStreamSearch (istreamsearch.com) is no exception to this and simply redirects to the Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) search engine.
Browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to the browser settings and/or undo any permitted changes made. Therefore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removing the browser hijacker. As mentioned, IStreamSearch can track data.
It can record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This sensitive information is then shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure browser/system integrity and user safety, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated immediately upon detection.

MovieSearches, ConverterSearchNow, and Jolly Web are some examples of other hijackers. They may seem legitimate and offer a wide variety of "useful" functionality, however, the features promised are seldom operational. In fact, this information is true of most PUAs.
The only purpose of this unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. Regular users receive no real value and can experience serious problems. PUAs hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and collect private data.
How did IStreamSearch install on my computer?
Certain PUAs (including IStreamSearch) have "official" download pages. These applications can also be downloaded/installed with other programs. "Bundling" is the term used to define this deceptive marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions.
Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system. When clicked, intrusive ads can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation and/or purchase. It is crucial to only download from official and verified sources, since untrusted channels including unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders can offer deceptive and bundled content.
When downloading/installing, it is important to read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive advertisements typically seem normal and harmless, however, they can redirect to dubious web pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on).
If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay. If your computer is already infected with IStreamSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
