How to remove the MovieBoxSearch browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MovieBoxSearch?
MovieBoxSearch is a browser hijacker. Following successful installation, it makes alterations to browser settings to promote movieboxsearch.com (a bogus search engine). This browser hijacker also has data tracking capabilities, which are employed to collect browsing-related information.
Since most users install MovieBoxSearch unintentionally, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other popular browsers are typical targets of browser hijackers. They reassign the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of bogus search engines.
Therefore, with a browser hijacker installed, each new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar redirects to the promoted address. MovieBoxSearch makes these modifications to browsers as well, and the aforementioned actions cause redirects to movieboxsearch.com.
Fake search engines are usually unable to provide unique results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Yahoo, Google, Bing and other legitimate sites. The movieboxsearch.com web searcher is no exception to this and redirects to the Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) search engine.
Browser hijackers undo any changes users attempt to make to their browsers and/or restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it. Furthermore, MovieBoxSearch can track data.
It can record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information derived from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, the presence of data-tracking content on devices can lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

AllRadioSearch, WinkiSearch and Trafc Tab are some examples of other browser hijackers. They may seem legitimate, and often entice users into download/installation with offers of "useful" functionality, however, the features promised rarely work as advertised and, in most cases, do not work at all.
In fact, this information is true of most PUAs. The sole purpose of this unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and gather vulnerable information.
How did MovieBoxSearch install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed through the download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious is called "bundling". Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system.
Some PUAs have "official" promotional web pages, from which they can be downloaded. Once clicked, intrusive advertisements can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources, since dubious download channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting (freeware) sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule, etc.) and other third party downloaders can offer deceptive and bundled content.
Download and installation processes must be treated with caution. Read the terms, study all available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Exercise caution when browsing.
Intrusive ads may seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious websites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others). If you encounter these ads or redirects, inspect the system and remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.
If your computer is already infected with MovieBoxSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
